Ladies,

Once again I turn to you for advice on my travel plans! DH's dream was always to visit the Smokies in the fall - and I think this is the year we should try doing that. Any suggestions? I can point out the general area on the map, but what town should we stay in? Or anything, really, that you think I should know about going there - please share!

Much appreciated in advance.

I've been there during the October month and it is stunningly beautiful. Lucky you. There's lots of cabins/apartments or houses for rent that are on the mountain especially around Gatlinburg with fireplaces, jacuzzi's etc..

So strange to hear about the Dillard House on the Dubai expat forum but so cool! The Dillard House is wonderful and their restaurant is family style where they seat you at big round tables with other people and they bring out the most wonderful food to your table and you help yourself to what you want and how much you want. It's delicious! Have you considered somewhere around Asheville, NC? The Biltmore is in that area and gorgeous that time of the year. My husband's uncle lives in Franklin NC and the area is ablaze with color that time of year. Do you ride motorcycles? You can rent them and ride through the mountains to see the foliage.

Thanks so much, Georgiagirl! To be honest I only really checked the Northern areas (Gatlinburg, Cades Cove, etc) but now I will check out the Appalachian Trail and the railroad! :)

First advice is to reserve in advance! You're getting a good head start! Being from Georgia, I'm more familiar with the foothills of the Appalachian Trail. Nice places in Georgia are Blue Ridge, Hiawassee, and Blairsville. You could also stay at the Dillard House which is full of history and yummy food. Georgia hosts Rock City, which is on Lookout Mountain and is a great place for kids (or adults if you've never been!) You can see like 5 states from the top or something like that. Ruby Falls (underground waterfall) is on the same mountain. Gatlinburg, Tennessee is also really gorgeous. It's just south of Pigeon Forge (also nice) where Dolly Parton has her amusement park. Also nice are Highland, North Carolina and Cherokee, North Carolina. Cherokee is a Native American reservation and has a Harrah's c a s i n o. Wherever you stay, you must take the Smoky Mountain Railroad ride (first class if you can!). Absolutely beautiful. http://www.gsmr.com/
