OK here is a random one for ya. Not a wind up either. I know a lady (cleaning lady - CL we shall call her) who cleans the house of another lady, rich b*tch (RB) we shall call her and so one day RB asks CL to clean out her freezer and throw away all of the meat and food in there. So CL gets to it and throws it all away, except for a bit of meat which CL takes to give to her dogs instead of wasting it. RB wanted it in the bin anyway so what does it matter. Anyways so RB comes home later and rifles through the bin like a loon saying she wants the meat back. Only its gone - in the dogs belly. She goes mental at CL saying it was stealing and now is off on a tangent accusing her of stealing money and all sorts of things, which she hasnt done at all. Only this meat really, which was only going to go to waste. CL is worried RB will go mental and make a huge deal about it tarnish her name about the town when she didnt intend any harm.

Who do you think is in the wrong here and what would you do in either position? Just curious :)

all a load of carp. Clever OP starting this one off. anyway, as was mentioned, it was not garbage and never got to the garbage. Maybe the madam had poisoned the meat and was planning to kill her DH, but then he suddenly passed away naturally and so she needed to dispose of the meat. ALWAYS do as you are told. Are you serious? you're going to drum up some ridiculously unlikely story to use as an example as to why you should ALWAYS do as you're told? OK then..... I'll come up with something as ridiculous as you, her employer told her to walk off a cliff, with your theory she should do that? And if you come back saying that was ridiculous then please, read your post about madam poisoning meat to kill DH again.

I disagree that someone - employee or otherwise - should just "Do something they are told to do without question"... so many historical occasions where this has come back to bite them... Initiative is much better in an employee than blindly following instruction. I understand that the OP is referring to something outside Dubai, but the lack of questioning and initiative by many workers in this region is what lets the place down in terms of customer service and efficient operations.. JMHO!

lawyers? Not necessary. If a domestic servant is given a duty then she should perform it without question. And yes, I do object to maids retrieving items from my trash, if I offer it first then ok, but it is trash and my trash....... I'm asking for a legal opinion as i'm genuinely curious, as i don't know the legalities. Just because one holds an opinion it doesn't make it right, no matter how emphatically one expresses it. Ok not a lawyer here so can't comment on the legalities under Sharia law but in common law countries once RB said "throw it out" she relinquished any rightful ownership of the meat. Therefore CL or anyone else for that matter can take legal possession.

so, you're saying if she would've put it in the garbage and then took it out of there, then all would be good. i get it now. makes sense.

It may be ok to consume foods that are gone off in other parts of the world but I would be wary in Dubai simply because the weather is a little... warmer and there is humidity which does make the shelf life shorter. http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/two-children-die-of-suspected-food-poisoning-after-takeaway I think there was another incident before this in Sharjah as well? If food is past its due date, it should not be consumed. One poster mentioned that her mom consumes old food. Well she is lucky then. Does not mean the rest of the world has such a great immune system. If my maid had gotten sick after consuming that old food or even worse, died, I am sure the media and the human rights activists would have been banging down on my door claiming that I was giving her old food! Oh horrible employer how dare you feed the maid old food. So either way.... you do not win! Yes, was talking about my grandmother and trust me she's not the only one who does this with food, so I don't think it all comes down to "luck" icequeen... ETA: and anyway, I don't see why we've all gone off on a tangent about people eating off food when the OP clearly said it was given to her friends dog... lol edited by AdviceSeeker on 16/02/2011

I used to have the fridge/freezer combo and realised the freezer part was not as powerful as a normal freezer should be. So after the holidays and meat having been in there for quite some time I decided I didn't want to eat it and put everything in a plastic bad and threw it down the chute. Later in the day my husband got home and says the watchman spoke to him and had said there are crazy people throwing away perfectly good meat in the building so the watchman had saved the meat for himself! We had quite a good giggle about the whole thing.

So basically you object to someone you know benefiting from your trash, but you're quite happy for it to go somewhere else where someone you don't know may benefit from it (yes, people do rummage through dump sites to retrieve others trash for themselves)? Come on.... really? Its trash, garbage, you don't want it, what does it matter if someone else gets some joy out of it?

Just told my DH about this thread and his response is "There are alot of people up their own @rses in this country. They think just because they have a maid that they are a CEO of multi-national company". I tend to agree. ROFPML..... I'm with your husband!

Remember many of these maids cannot afford meat and may well have taken it for herself and not dogs but too embarrassed to say so. Its a question of being sensitive to the poverty of others... throwing out what we see as rubbish is throwing our wealth in the face of the less fortunate who probably went home and gave her family a nice meal of meat. We throw our wealth around without a second thought for those who would love a 10th of what we ha so dont judge them for this.

I can't believe it - not only are we getting threads about maids here but rows about maids that are not even here! Do I detect the old attitude of - "will post this to see if people agree with me and if they don't, I will take umbrage and suggest what morons they are"??? Jeez.........

Maybe the thread should have been titled differently. Already the OP has said that the maid has stolen the meat then goes on to defend her. I seem to have missed the memo that stated it was fine to be a thief. edited by Icedqueen on 15/02/2011 Semantics. She was also accused of stealing all sorts of things. Don't see you trying to pick the unfairness of that up. She did take the meat, but it was in the bin. Things in my bin are fair game and i see it as recycling. Being so very high and mighty about rubbish is rather curious. RB sounds awful and i suspect CL should tell her that she is unhinged and walk out. Unlike the dubious law and order in the this country, i don't think coppers in the UK would be particularly interested (UNLESS, RB denies telling her to throw it out). Any lawyers amongst us with a valid opinion?

I wouldn't care if someone took my trash. I live in an apartment where we have a communal trash chute. Sometimes I notice stuff that I have thrown away (toys, appliances, etc.) downstairs. What bothers me, though, is if the maid takes my trash and keeps it in her room. I like my trash off my property and not just cluttering another room in my home.

OMG... this thread is hilarious!!!! Honestly, if you ask someone to "throw away" stuff such as food/clothes/old appliances etc, what does it matter if it doesn't go into the bin but is used by someone else... I throw stuff away all the time and my maids opt to keep it to use for themselves and honestly... who cares! its not like I wanted it anymore... In fact, I throw stuff away that my maid doesn't want and puts outside by the bin and its gone within two seconds, should I chase these people down the street and order them to put it back because I only wanted it to go in the bin to a dumping ground? And example comparing this to a nurse who was asked to dispose of medical supplies is just ridiculous, its not even comparable! Medical supplies have to be disposed of in a particular way, and if someone (a nurse) is keeping them what in the world is she using them for? She should be in trouble as its dangerous!! And to the poster who said the food smelled off to you thats why you binned it, FYI my grandmother (who is now 95) eats food past the due by date which I wouldn't touch with a barge poll because she has come from a place where food was scarce and wasting was not heard of, she'll actually go and buy food that is massively reduced because its about to go off and keep it and eat it! I know its gross to me and most of you, but some people just come from different backgrounds and regard food differently to us... as another example, the Masai tribes who drink cows milk mixed with cows blood, unpasteurized etc which if I drank it would probably make me violently ill, but for them is a staple in their diet! Kylie2810 whether or not this maid is western or not IMHO doesn't change the fact that RB is a looney and clearly some others on here should be joining her in the looney bin!!! Have none of you ever heard the saying "one man's trash is another man's treasure" geez

blatant stealing. If I want to throw something out and my maid wants it I expect her to ask, not just take it.

Employees should do what they are told. If they want something they should ask. But taking is taking and that is that It is what it is. Rubbish - it's a grey area. ;-)
