Planning a trip with the in laws to County Kerry this summer. Anybody from there or have been there? Could you please recommend the best area to stay for a week or so. We are hoping to rent a cottage but not sure how to select the best area. Looking at somewhere where we could go for a long walk in the mountain, cycling, fishing, beach, etc. FIL is thinking of driving from South West to there but we are not really on board. Think it is better to fly and rent a car there instead. TIA.

Thanks girls for all the info. DH and I are definitely wary about the long drive and ferry trips. Really don't want to spend more time on travelling than necessary. So far I really like the cottages in Dingle but have not checked out Sneem yet.

Hi, I'd advise not taking the ferry. It's really grim and takes a while, but that's just from one experience taking it, so others may have more advice. You can fly to Cork, Kerry or Shannon, all are reasonably within reach of Kerry. Kenmare and Dingle are both lovely, as suggested. Both will provide a good base to explore the rest of Kerry and are big enough that all the things you need are on hand and still small enough to be quaint. Both should also have loads of accommodation options, as are very touristy. Sneem is a personal favourite of our family, but it's quite small. Make sure you stop there if you get the chance. FFx

Worth checking out ferry crossings too. You can take the Swansea to Cork Ferry from South Wales which will leave you only an hour or so drive from Kenmare from memory or a ferry from Fishgard to Rosslare which is a shorter crossing but a lot more driving. There are some lovely places in South Wales too. The Ring of Kerry drive is lovely and both Kenmare and Dingle are lovely places to stay. Have a great trip.

There is a ferry that goes from Pembroke to Rosslare which takes 4 hrs but you will have another 3/4 hrs drive on the other side before you reach Kerry! http://www.irishferries.com/gb/ferry-to-rosslare.asp You could also fly to Cork City or Kerry airport and maybe hire a car there. Kerry airport is tiny so you will be in and out in no time but I don't think any airline flies from Bristol. Aer Lingus flies from Bristol to Cork airport. Good luck!

Thanks Freckle. FIL want to drive from south west of England to I guess....SW of Ireland :( Hoping we could fly from Bristol instead.....not sure to which airport yet. I guess depending on which area we decide to stay at. Will check out the websites.

Your best bet is to do a search on the Bord Failte website ( link below) to get an idea of budget, facilities, area etc. Kerry is really beautiful but do you want to be in a more isolated little village near the sea or nearer a big town like Tralee/Killarney? Didn't quite get what you meant re driving from "South West to there". Kerry is in the south west of Ireland! Which airport are you flying into? http://www.discoverireland.ie/Accommodation.aspx http://www.discoverireland.ie/Destinations/Kerry.aspx
