I’ll be travelling to Oz for a couple of weeks to visit a dear friend and there are a few things I’d like someone to confirm about the goods that I am allowed/not allowed to carry:

Lotions and potions (creams, shampoos, etc)- checked luggage

Medicinal things like allergy pills, antibiotics (tetracycline), etc- I believe these must go in hand luggage?

Sandalwood powder for my friend, it’ll be in a small airtight container, I reckon this should go in the checked luggage too?

I know these questions might be silly, but I just want to make sure that there’s no problem when I land there. Also, my friend suggested I exchange some money in Dubai before I leave, and to also carry travelers cheques. Is this okay or are there other options that I should consider? Tia!

Ohh you will have such a great time, Aust is amazing! Customs are fine with medicine as long as you declare it, and they prefer it to have a prescription with your name on it. Whenever I go back to Aust, I always tick the 'yes' box on the customs slip about medicines, and then show them that I am carrying the pill, sleeping pills etc. Be upfront about everything, and you will have no problems. Re baby food - if it's liquid, it needs to be less than 100ml. If it's mashed food, you should get away with it but if it's a gel-like consistency it has to be less than 100ml. I hope you have a wonderful time :)

Yes.. Less than 100 ml is allowed.. But.. What about the Hipp Organic Bottles for the flight? Are those allowed since they are a part of the baby food? I am not sure I would call them liquid but you never know.. Has anyone faced any trouble in taking these bottles on the flight? And what about medicines for the baby? If we have medical prescription, can we take the meds on the flight?

Another quick question- can I carry my perfume bottle (less than 100ml) in my handbag?

Oooopsss !!! I had got couple of ceramic salt and pepper cellars and the sheikh and shiekha spatula holders. Now the spatula holders come along with few wooden spatulas and a whisker(metal)... Now would the wooden spatulas get thrown off at the airport? Spending amount to retrieve from the quarantine would be more than the actual cost of the spatulas. Its better I give it to friends out here than see it all getting thrown away. Can someone confirm if its safe to carry wooden spatulas?

Thanks waxmuch, shelly and maxindubai for the helpful responses. Will forget about the sandalwood powder, don't want to risk being held up. Will mention the EFTPOS thing to my friend. I'm sure I'll have more questions in the coming days, so will come back here and ask :) Chiggy, when are you leaving? I'm so excited to see my friend, I can't sleep at night! 4 more weeks to go! A week more and off I go.. Yooohooo !!!

Was watching "who do you think you are?" the other day and Jason Donovan is the decent of both a convict and a captain who brought the convicts over...... was really interesting..... edited by Izzy99 on 13/03/2011

Us Aussies may be laid back and carefree but when it comes to the Customs and Quarantine staff at the airports they seriously mean business. You don't want to cross them because you'll come off second best. :D

You can bring wooden boxes . camels etc in but declare them-they will often inspect to see if they are varnished and check for woodworm-some items can be sprayed and returned to you at your cost if there are issues. Sometimes they just ask if the boxes are varnished and don't look at them-but whatever you do, make sure you tick the box saying you have got wooden items. Odd things aren't allowed-once I bought home a wooden nativity set-which they had no issues with but the remved the 'wood grass' from its base. Oh and the customs guys are good to deal with if you are up front with them-just tick every box-even if you aren't sure-if you only have chocolates tick the food box and ask if they are a food item for example-generally they don't check if you list what you have. And untreated leather like drum skins are a no-no- your camel saddle on a wooden will probably not be an issue-but ask edited by wuffles on 13/03/2011

So here's a dumb question of the day - what's the problem with wood? Not such a dumb question. :) Largely because any wood products may contain woodworm or insects which, given the Australian environment, could seriously jeopardise the health of native fauna in the country. YOU may know that the furniture or other wood product has been sitting happily, not wriggling, in your house for years, but Customs don't know that. So they check/spray/radiate everything. And then charge you for the privilege. ;) http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/travel/entering-australia/cant-take

What about the camels that you get in carrefour (wooden and leather ones). I thought of taking them as souvenirs!! Would they allow that in? Would ceramic fridge magnets be allowed ??? Ceramic is different to wood. :) But seriously, carrying in wood products is frowned upon, especially in luggage. It's a different matter when it comes through in shipped goods [where Customs can inspect it'> but even then, you are almost always liable for extra charges for your wooden goods to be sprayed with special insecticide before they will release said goods into your custody. Just a word of warning. :) NB This obviously applies to any and all wooden furniture that you ship as well. :( . edited by WaxMuch on 13/03/2011

I once brought through a wooden cat that I bought at a small market in a tiny village somewhere in France. They took it off me and I had to wait a while but in the end they allowed it. They basically explained to me that since it was nice and smooth with no 'holes' in it that it was ok. I'm sure there were other more scientific reasons but this is how they explained it to me being a blonde.

I agree, best advice is to declare, declare, declare! On the incoming pax card when it asks of you're carrying any type of food, it really does mean ANY type of food... chocolate DOES count. :D Enjoy Oz... best country in the world!! ;)

If the airport puppies get whiff of your sandalwood powder, it'll be tossed. No ifs, no buts; you are not allowed to take any wood/sawdust products into the country. Sure, you could try and sneak it in, but I wouldn't. The only time these things are allowed in is via official channels, checked/sprayed and what-have-you. Sorry. You are allowed to take lotions/creams in your hand luggage so long as it's in the appropriate zip-locked bags AND it's under 100mls [same as other international airports'>. If in doubt, check it in. Drugs? Carry those you need, pack those you don't. So long as none are illegal, it doesn't matter where you carry them. The x-ray machines see everything, so they will stop you if they are suspicious anyway. :) Travellers' cheques are still accepted, but they are rapidly going out of fashion because of credit cards. No need to carry them. You might want to carry a bit of Oz cash, but the exchange rate is better if you simply withdraw Oz money from an EFTPOS [or automatic teller'> when you arrive. Tipping isn't as prevalent in Oz as elsewhere, but do carry some small notes for tipping in hotels. It IS appreciated. :)

This is a useful site. http://www.customs.gov.au Enjoy your trip but make sure you declare anything you're not sure about on the card you have to sign on arrival. Not too sure about "sandlewood powder".

Better to know what all would be thrown off at the airport and what would be allowed.
