I am hosting my son's 4th birthday on Saturday and wanted to make something all of the children could in instead of singling one individual out who has a wheat, dairy and gluten intolerance. Any idea how i might make a batter for home made fish and chips using corn flour?

Also any idea what 'tasty' alternative to birthday cake I could offer?

Thanks very very much in advance...i'm getting desperate ;-)

FYI- most sausages have gluten in them, as does ham and bacon, and any of those processed meats, like turkey breasts etc The sausages at Organic Cafe are gluten-free - we love them!

Thanks very very much in advance...i'm getting desperate ;-) Don't know about the fish and chips.... but I did see in Spinneys a whole range of Gluten Free baking packs.... Can't remember the name but they're in a pink box and they're in the baking isle... they had chocolate brownie ones, and a whole bunch of others which may be an alternative to cake... didn't read this all but here's an e-how for gluten free fish and chips... maybe you could get some ideas from this http://www.ehow.com/how_4573431_gluten-free-fish-chips.html

I made the cake (mentioned below) this evening, and it seems it was pretty nice. I can give you the recipe if interested, was dead easy.

You could make your own burgers and serve without the bun to those that are intolerant. I know one boy who does that.

I don't think beer is gluten free....... I think cornflour and soda water would be a better option.

What about a ice cream cake homemade? You can do ice cream (dairy free) from bananas (read the link) .. http://www.instructables.com/id/1-ingredient-Ice-Cream/ The sponge cake /base can be done by using ready mix powders found at Organic supermarket from Orgran brand.

Andrea, you mention fried rice which traditional recipe use soy sauce. You can't use it if the child has a allergy gluten /wheat. You have to use Tamari sauce ( heavier then soy ,you jest need to add less) Thank you, wow it's a little mine field but i'd determined both the LO and mum will get to have a day off of worrying about whats being served.

I would check with parents of specific children as you may be able to use camel milk instead of cows and the same goes for other food intolerences. Many people have a wide range of intolences these days as they are diagnosed today . Camel milk Non gluten Flour ( expensive) Good Luck I am hosting my son's 4th birthday on Saturday and wanted to make something all of the children could in instead of singling one individual out who has a wheat, dairy and gluten intolerance. Don't know have not looked at ingredients on non alcohol beer. Just wanted to let people know there is an alternative to alcohol based beer. With regards to alergies or intolerences. i would think people with alergies need and should inform hosts and maybe give them the option of bring their own food to a party if necessary. With regard to intolerences that is different I understand and may not be as crucial as alergy. So many people appear to have intolerences now and a nightmare for any host. Non Alcoholic beer is for sale in supermarkets It's wheat based isn't it?

How fab you are to try to include all your guests. A cornflour/soda water tempura batter should be fine - or you could perhaps do chicken nuggets/strips - chicken dipped in egg then crushed cornflakes. Rice Krispies are not gluten-free :(. I have a recipe for a victoria sponge which just uses brown rice flour instead of wheat flour (I think all the other quantities are the same - I guess you have to add baking powder, though). I'm going to try it this week. Y ou'd have to use a dairy-free margarine (e.g. Pure) to make it DF. Otherwise, easy GFDF treats are cornflake nests made with melted DF chocolate and cornflakes - or meringues (fab! But not quick and easy.) Good luck!

Seriously, i've always been a big advocate of catering these things myself as I don't like the whole processed chicken nugget thing that a lot of the play areas offer but this is getting very tricky! I thought i'd finally come up with a suitable menu, home made (oven cooked) wedges, fish, vegetable fried rice, fruit platter, veg sticks, dariy free dips followed by cake but it seems it's not that easy and I haven't even thought about party games...I only have 4 days to go :-( It's my birthday on the same day and I really don't want to end up stressing about it...there must be an easy solution to this one :-). Maybe next year we'll do the play place instead ;-)

Sorry not stirring the pot, but are Muslims allowed to eat something that has been cooked with alcohol, even if the alcohol content has been cooked off (genuine question) i.e. something cooked with beer/brandy etc? (Just in case you have muslim children whose mums would mind the cake having beer in it!) (sorry!) Oh blimey! I have no idea if I do or not so, if I can't use milk and I can't use beer I guess I have to scrap the batter and just go for a bread crumb type thing...this is getting very complicated :-( Am seriously considering just filling them fully of jelly!

I do as Izzy said, but instead of bread crumbs I use crumbed cereal - rice crispies or corn flakes, but I'm sure you could use anything similar to give you a crust.

beer is wheat based isn't it? Why not use bread crumbs? Get some gluten / diary free bread from organic supermarket and make into bread crumbs. Toss the fish in corn flour, beaten egg and then the bread crumbs - and shallow fry on both sides. Izzy I did think of that, does that bread taste the same (ie the other kids won't notice the difference?) Have no idea - am not glutten intolerant, was just an alternative. Lol :):)
