I couldn't be bothered commenting on the original EW thread on this, but since it's been raised again ... I just read a critique of the VF article on Kipp Report and am inclined to agree with the following statement: [i'> We just wish one thing: If you’re going to bash Dubai, at least do a proper job. Go to a labour camp, uncover human rights issues if you can, speak to people about fraud and laundering and corruption and whatever else you say goes on here. But also meet the extremely intelligent expats who have lived in Dubai for decades, making a life for themselves, not just the drunk Brits at Double Decker. Go to the old parts of Dubai, see some of its history. Don’t just show up and go, “Ooh, Dubai is so crass and tasteless and it didn’t even exist 20 years ago and now everything’s abandoned”, because, frankly, you’re making a massive fool out of yourself.[/i'> http://www.kippreport.com/2011/03/heard-it-all-before/ love it

I read the article on the link in the original thread. I found it shallow, badly constructed and really, in the great scheme of things, unnecessary as it's all been said before by the likes of Germaine Greer etc. who come here for the weekend, do a Big Bus tour and think they know it all. Dubai is very 'real' for lots of us who find it a darn sight better than our home countries in a lot of respects. I don't know where 'A. A. Gill' comes from but I suspect the UK. People in glass houses..... Oh come on the Tarty Party Gear was funny.. As was the comment about Ski Dubai as being Narnia..

The article is funny. Some of the lines he was using cracked me up. And he hit the nail on the head with the ski dubai/narnia comments.

The article was actually written by a U.K. male journalist and I posted it days ago. Has already had over 4000 hits! Doesn't make it an interesting article though, it is just the same re hashed material that you could get from the times or any other mag/paper that dislikes Dubai, easy writing!

Hardly, it's written by one man, not the world! Dubai is such an easy topic for journos to report on from this same angle...boring just another same same article! edited by jwal on 14/03/2011
