My 11 year old girl gets extremely nervous and anxious when flying. This summer we'll be doing a lot of traveling and one of these flights is one of those 14 hours one. Could you recommend anything that I can give her to avoid the anxiety? Do you know any other ways to reassure her? Thanks!!

actually I have bought rescue remedy in the nutrition section of organic foods and cafe. if its not on the shelf, ask them as I know I got it there. they may have just temporarily run out. Thanks, Sally, that's good to know.

I think Rescue Remedy is unavailable here because it has alcohol in it, but I'm not sure. Valerian is supposed to be a natural way of calming anxiety and helping people to sleep, but I'm not sure if you can get it here, either. Other than that, hypnotherapy sounds a great idea. Is Beryl Comar a hypnotherapist you have used here, Real Opossum?

I second rescue remedy...seem to vaguely recall i have an unopened bottle of it (the liquid form) somewhere in the shambles if it turns out thats the way you want to go? if you can get it here, it's got to be as rare as hens teeth.

Can you ask your doctor to prescribe a sleeping tablet or something?

My DS finds any change stressful. We have always used rescue remedy- which I think helps a lot. I just haven't seen it to buy here..... For DS I actually use the blue current pastels, that have the rescue remedy in them.

DD had hypnotherapy treatment last year in the UK and then they gave her a cd to listen to every night (specially made for her). It was for a different problem, but it has helped and now she just listens to the CD once a week. The hypnotherapist said that working with children is easier than adults as they are more open to suggestion. Heck, I would try anything if it meant no drugs were involved!! Yes, when they are small you can give them anti histamine etc, but she needs to be able to walk off the plane too....and hypnotherapy, if it works, would set her up for life.

Thank you so much for the ideas and recommendations! I had tried to give her in the past cough medication to make her a bit sleepy...but it doesn't work with her and it makes me think that she is so nervous about the whole trip, flying, etc. I like the idea of the ginger biscuits, the journal, camera, everything really. The hypnotherapy also sounds good but would it work on kids?

Ginger biscuits, ginger sweets or anything with ginger. the first time i flew, my mom stuffed my bag with ginger cookies. it also helps for nausea incase she wants to get sick and bubblegum, chewing a minty gum helps those anxious tummy nerves. Good luck

I am also a nervous flyer although am slowly getting over it due to doing plenty of it in the past year! I alleviate the anxiety with copious amounts of red wine but I wouldn't recommend this for your 11 year old :) Do any airlines still allow visits to the cockpit? I am thinking probably not due to events of the past few years but I am sure that someone in the know told me that they did. Maybe worth looking into. Is there any specific thing that makes her anxious? I used to worry about the different noises (I thought that the 'bing bong' noises which is the crew communicating to each other or people asking for drinks meant that there was a problem!?) and I bought a book which explained each aspect of the flight and what happens so that you know that the noises are normal. Or if it is something else that worries her try to find a way of rationalising it. I still have a huge fear of turbulence so I keep meaning to read up on it so that I can be happy that it is normal and not dangerous to the plane. Also - in the UK some airports run courses for nervous flyers which go through everything and end with a short flight, do any airports here do something similar? Good luck, hope you can have a fairly stress free flight!

You can get natural herbal tablets that can calm her down before you fly? Other than that, I would look at the movie chart that is showing on the fplane. Plan what films to watch etc to get her interested. I would also maybe get her a journal so she can staple her tickets into and diarise her days (seems like you are going on an adventure!) and a camera too. I would also give her an allowance to get some things for the plane or make her a plane pack to include some of her favourite magazines, a book, sweets, some kind of craft kit etc. Hope that helps. x
