Hi girls,

So me and my boyfriend both just started new jobs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and there's no time to take leave to go back home and have the proper "big family wedding". We both want it, but it's just not possible now. So I heard from a friend that you can get married in Dubai and let it only be valid in the UAE. We are looking into this as we really want to stay together here in Dubai, but we don't want to ruin the special day when we go back to our home countries to have the "real" wedding - and off course, then you don't want to be married already.

Does anyone know how we can do this and only be legally married in the UAE? We're both Christian, he's from Portugal and I'm from South Africa.

Thanks xx

Hi, I got married here, but as wbusy has replied - a marriage is marriage and it can't be only in UAE. We wanted civil marriage and fortunately my embassy (we are also 2 different nationalities) was doing this. You can check with your embassies if that is possible as not all are doing it. You can do civil marriage and then later go for the ceremony back home :) Congrats :)

I have never heard of this. Unless you are both muslim any marriage you have here (there is no such thing as a civil wedding) will be marriage plain and simple. Whether or not it is legally recognized in other countries has to do with whether you have the license submitted and stamped by the ministry/government office there. You should just have the ceremony and then do it again if you like. Congratulations and GL!
