If he has been taking less milk as a result of the puree your supply might have adjusted, but a few extra feeds should bump it back up, he might get frustrated but since he has been refusing the spoon he probably will be quite happy not to see the purees.
My baby had reflux too, it went away by 5 months but came back when I started solids at 61/2, I did find that purees were easier on his tummy, he could eat chunkier foods happily but they sat in his tummy longer and caused him more reflux pain, he seems fine now at 11 months and is happy to feed himself anything dry, so I make him little pikelets full of berries and other fruit, cornbread, sugar-free banana bread etc for him to feed himself. Something like sliced mango he def wants me to hold and broccolli, steamed carrot sticks etc depends on his mod, if he has just been eating something dry then he'll give them a go but if not he will grizzle until mummy holds them. I think some babies might gag more on chunky foods than finger foods as have are trying to drink them like purees, so maybe skip the chunks and try roasted vegies etc, just keep offering but not pushing I guess.
thanks so much. I'll definitely have to try some of that.
Thanks so much for the advice. I completely agree and think it's a mindset thing - I can't help but think he needs to eat the equivilent of the pureed food I am giving him which I know is silly. I'm gonna give it a go a see how it pans out. He already eats bits of pasta and fruits himself so I think I just need to give him some more options and see how it goes.
Just another question (probably a silly one) to set my mind at rest - do you think stopping purees altogether all of a sudden will have any impact on him? or will he just get used to the new way of eating?
Thanks again for everyones input.

we're finally getting DS 11mths to eat chunkier foods. It was a struggle since he had reflux and would gag on puree til 8 months and just stopped gagging on some chunky foods recently. He loves his cheerios which is nice because he gets it as a snack and he gets them served by his 3 yr old brother.
Just wondering how I can move him to heavier finger foods without gagging and vomitting? My first DS was no problem and was actually eating everything like ginger beef by this age.
I actually don't think it is PLW if you are following your baby's lead and it would be PLW if you insisted your baby only feed themselves when they wanted you to do so but labels are not really important. I think all parenting is somewhat parent led (who decides when they will sit their baby in a chair and who selects what food is put in front of the baby) no matter how many choices you give your baby and there is always an element of being baby-led to varying degrees be it sleep/eat/play. Your baby will let you know when they want help and it is up to you to decide when to listen and when to leave them to sort it out themselves.
You are right Novice - it doesn't matter as long as it works for you and your baby. What you described is PLW (Parent-Led Weaning) if it really needs a label ... I consider myself a hardcore BLWer but I am a strong believer in doing what works.
I wouldn't get too hung up about the precise definition of BLW. Just feed your LO the way that works best for both of you, you don't have to follow anyone's rules. I intended to do BLW but ended up introducing purees as BLW progressed very slowly initially and we both found mealtimes a bit frustrating around 7 months. He enjoyed being spoonfed for a while, so gave him both finger & spoon food at each meal. Then around 8 months he really got the hang of eating finger food and started refusing the spoon. So, from then on I only gave him finger food. My DS is very picky though with regards to what he picks up and doesn't like having dirty, gooey fingers. So he has always picked 'dry' food up himself but if its 'wet' slimey food like banana slices or cream cheese he resists touching it and I often pop it in his mouth like Kiwispears says, that is what he prefers and it works for us. Around 14 months he started showing interest in the spoon again and one of his favourite foods is plain yoghurt now. He sometimes tries to hold the spoon himself but is clearly not ready to spoonfeed himself independently so mostly I spoonfeed him his yoghurt at the end of his finger food meals, while he plays around with a second spoon, that is what works for us at the moment. So, I just followed my baby's lead but according to the BLW pursists I am sure what we did does not constitute baby led weaning - and you know what, it doesn't really matter! Just go with the flow. If, for example, he likes being fed his cereal in the morning and then has finger foods for lunch and dinner - why not? :)

HAHA! I am convinced DD will have to be a celeb because she likes to be served and pampered - proper DIVA!
How do they learn not to get their hands dirty? I know DH would kill for the chance to eat with his hands and lick his plate ... lol!
lol my 11 month old loves feeding me, if we are spoonfeeding we get a spoon each :) He also really doesn't like to pick up the messy things and would prefer I did, should I worry he will grow up to be a lawyer or accountant or some other type of white collar job?
you are right kiwispiers - sometimes babies want to be fed - my DD is 14m and is ASKING to be spoonfed which is just about killing me ... but the thing is its HER decision - she wants me to spoon feed her then she takes the spoon off me then tries to feed me etc ...
sorry by "putting in" his mouth I meant letting him take it from your hand by mouth, not forcing it in, I should have been more clear. I might hold a banana for example, and he can take a bite or let him take a small peice of something soft, not pop in a piece of raw apple or something. In my mind BLW is about being baby led in your approach, not following "rules", my LO would lean forward, grab my hand and bring it to his mouth and get very upset if I put the food down on his tray so I think that despite the food being in my hand, we were in a way BLW as he had control. For safety sake the food does need to start in the front of their mouth and be moved to the back by them, not you.

Just let him put the food in his mouth himself. Putting normal food in his mouth (as in not puree) can cause choking and is completely against BLW.
The biggest challenge is to look at nutrition over the period of one week not one day. You trust your baby to breastfeed for as long as he likes and as often so the same goes for food. I can guarantee that no baby drinks the exact same amount as breast milk per day whilst breastfeeding and no adult eats the same amount everyday either - needs vary day to day.
The important thing with BLW is to trust your baby ... personally I think a lot of it is a mindset ... here are some more tips http://www.mummyinprovence.com/baby-led-weaning-blw/my-10-straight-up-tips-on-starting-baby-led-weaning-blw
yes if he wants to let him feed himself, and you can also put little bits and pieces into his mouth by hand (which is what my LO preferred) you can also pre-load a spoon and let him attempt to put it in his own mouth if you have a meat puree/mash that is tricky to give as finger food. Eat with him so he can see how to do it, babies love to observe and copy.
We did just that. Around that age, dd started refusing the spoon - a very common experience with parents of babies this age :) Babies are born with the ability to self-regulate the amount of food they take based on what they need, and this ability is still with them so I'd say you're absolutely right not to worry about the amount of food he takes as long as there's a variety of food on offer at each meal (plus as you say, breastmilk remains the most important source of nutrients throughout the first year).
Good luck, put lots of newspaper on the floor, and have fun!
xx

Hi there
I have been giving a mix of pureed and finger foods to my 8 month old since he turned 6 months. Lately he just won't open his mouth for the pureed foods so I end up sneaking it in - he happily eats it but as soon as he sees the spoon near his mouth his lips remained closed. He does enjoy lots of fruits and happily eats them by himself so I'm thinking I should just go down the BLW route and let him feed himself and not worry about it so much.
So I was wondering if anyone had any experience of moving to BLW at this age and how did it go? I'm guessing they won't eat at much at the beginning but does it really matter as I'm still breastfeeding him 5-7 times in a 24 hour period.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
