Hi
My baby is 7wks tomorrow and whilst bf has started smacking whilst feeding for just under a week now. She looks to have latched on well and I take her off if she hasn't and reposition her. I don't know if she has just taken up bad habit because at the start I was soo engorged (G cup wouldn't even cover my essential bits, my friends say each one is bigger than the size of her head lol) that it was difficult for her to latch on. Any suggestions? She is full of wind and it amuses my other two kids when she lets rip lol

I have a very overactive let down and laid back nursing was great for helping my daughter to cope with it. She would take in so much air and gag and choke when she would try to keep up with it until she was about 3 months or so. Laid back nursing just let gravity help ease the let down and put my daughter above the breast so that it was easier for her to control it. Could well be that she's struggling with let-down, certainly something to consider. Does the smacking occur throughout a feed or typically just towards the beginning? If you put her back to the same breast after a partial feed (when the breast is emptier and flow likely to be slower) do you hear the same noise? Thanks for getting back so quick! The latch does look good from outside so perhaps it is from inside, my letdown for me is quite intense and then there is lots of milk, a couple of times I've had to take her off because she appeared to be choking which was quite scared but my other 2 when bf did the same at this age. She does not have a tongue tie (dd1 had one but still successfully fed without any intervention). Baby is gaining weight, she is feeding every 2 - 3 hrs thereabouts. Her tongue does look a bit white at the back, perhaps thrush?? Thank you for your contact details will contact in the next few days if no changes, really appreciate this xx BF my other two for quite a while - I'm too lazy and disorganised to do bottles lol

Hi Blinkthink Smacking is typically a sign that baby isn't maintaining suction (the extra wind might also be a sign that she's taking in excess air as she feeds); sometimes a latch can look fine from the outside but attachment and suckling are still not quite right. It could be for many different reasons; positioning can certainly be a factor, but there are other temporary factors (e.g. due to infection - ear infection or thrush, for example, which make sucking painful), others longer-term (e.g. fast let-down; tongue-tie - most often these will have presented themselves by now *but not always*). If she's been feeding fine for 6 weeks (pain-free? Lots of wet and dirty nappies? Appropriate weight gain?), then you might like to first revisit positioning and attachment. As baby grows, this may need to be tweaked a bit; positions which worked well at first may give way to other positions. Some mums find that laid-back positions work well for them (see www.biologicalnurturing.com) and help their baby to achieve an effective latch, even after the first few weeks.
