DH & I feel a little upset by the fact that my parents have not bothered with a gift or card (or even mentioned the lack of gift or card) for our little boy's birthday or first 2 Christmases, but of course we cannot say anything about it. They seem to think that since they do not see him on the day and we live far away, it is okay to just call us on skype. Our little boy is their first grandchild and they are very fond of him, talk to him (on Skype) at least twice a week and see him for a whole month every year over the summer (they're not interested in visiting us here even though they have an open invitation). The other set of grandparents (my in-laws) always remember and make an effort, they either send money so that we can purchase a gift on their behalf, or bring a present when they see him next, which is about 3 times per year. The first time I hardly noticed but after the 2nd Christmas and with my little boy's 2nd birthday coming up soon I am starting to feel irritated, especially since he is beginning to understand more of what is going on. I just want to check what other grandparents do when their grandchildren are far away. Are my expectations unrealistic? It is not about the gift, as our little boy has plenty of toys, but about the gesture (or lack of it). We have never been in the habit of exchanging long distance birthday & Christmas gifts & cards with other adults in the family, but I feel that a little child (and especially a little grandchild) is different and deserves a little extra effort. Or am I wrong? Would appreciate your opinions on this!

I agree that gifts and cards, although nice to receive, are not the be and end all of a good relationship between children and grandparents. My parents could never afford to buy our children a lot while my inlaws were forever buying stuff. My MIL died in June and FIL died in September last year. DH's 13 year old nephew now has no grandparents so I was especially touched when on Christmas day, my own mum cuddled him and quietly told him that he could call her gran if he wished although she would never presume to replace his beloved grandma. He was in tears as she handed him a card and little present. It's the love and affection that is important, not gifts.

My DS doesnt received gifts or cards or visits. I wouldnt ask or expect it either. As far as visits are concerned - I don't see its a realistic expectation to move thousands of miles away from my family - and then expect that they have to pay thousands of dollars on a regular basis to follow us here to see their grandchild. I moved here - its my choice, and my responsibility. Not theirs. If it was them moving away and not visiting - completely different story. If your parents are talking to your LO twice a week - I think that is more than a fair enough arrangement, and shows their love for him, and their efforts and interest at maintaining a relationship over the thousands of miles distance that your move has created. My DS doesn't get that much contact from any of his family - not would I expect it. I think your parents are making an above average effort with twice weekly contact. IMO I would be grateful for that. When it come to the "gesture" contacting twice per week over several years is a lot more of a gesture than buying something once a year and putting it in the mail. I would focus on what is important - the love and attention - not money and gifts, and also foster that attitude in your LO's.

We receive nothing, and would never expect a thing, A phone call is usually exchanged on birthdays. My children have never ever questioned why and love their grand parents to pieces! Our pare nts love the grand children to bits too!

No cards or gifts from hubby's side, but they do bring some gifts when they visit us, money and card from my mom but nothing from my brothers, I send a gift via amazon (family lives in Canada) every Xmas to my brothers children I tried to NOT do it but felt really bad about it...... It does hurt at first and I think u r right a little extra effort should be made I even had a heart to heart talk with them and told them how cut off and detached we felt...... Anyhow let them know how you feel and take it from thr.

I am in similar situation - my parents do not visit and my in-laws come to see us (well - kids rather ;)) at every possibility. I hope it will change later in time as I kids get older I plan (and already communicated it to my folks) to send kids for holidays to stay with them for weeks! They are super happy about the prospects :) We did family gathering recently. We have booked a holiday home in Europe and invited both sets of parents - it was fab, so maybe this would help to built the relationship? X

Thanks JoannaS. I know my parents love my LO but just wondering how I will explain to my kids when they are older why they only receive gifts (or visits!) from one set of grandparents. I am not expecting them to physically buy a box of Lego, wrap and post it.... but wish they could at least make the gesture of sending a few dirhams or saying that they will buy him something for his birthday when we see them over the summer.... or... anything... even if they could just bring the subject up so that we can see that it has at least occured to them? Of course we would then tell them not to worry about it, but at least they would have made a gesture. At this point it is mainly my DH who is annoyed but would hate for this to simmer for another 5 years... :(

Novice2, I am sure your parents love your LO to bits! I think it is a distance which lead to this situation. My parents do not send cards for my kids - although they send monies and there were presents when we went to my home country. My in-laws and extended family of DH send card and tons of presents at every possible occasion (it is a day after Christmas and we still did not manage to open all of them)!. I am sure that both sets of grandparents love the kids just as much! To be honest I do not encourage my parents to send anything here as I found Emirates post unreliable. Chin up! X
