Kiwispiers, DS is much younger, occasionally he is given a dummy and wakes up crying every time dummy fells out of his mouth, hence I went a cold turkey. Not pretty - I know, but after 1 night it was all ok. Luckilly now he founds his thumb (or rather fist) and I really dont mind this! ;)

Hi kiwispiers the dummy thing is a nightmare, my eldest at didn't stop using his till he was 2.5 years, but he decided on his own. My daughter on the other hand is 3 and there is no sign of her ever giving it up. I'm going to have to go cold turkey but don't have the energy to fight the tantrums at the moment. If you discover a miracle way please let me know.

thats what I'm thinking FCM, its all or nothing if I want him to forget about it. (pram incident the other day was because I forgot it). He did eventually sleep but there were quite a few tears first and I'm not sure I want to put him through that, he sleeps well at night , naps well by day and speaks well so its purely because I'm worried about his palate/teeth development. perhaps will just wait it out a bit longer, I got my hopes up when a couple of friends said their kids lost interest at the 15 month mark... :(

I personally wouldn't take it away just for day time etc if your gonna get rid just do it..they would find it hard to understand y they can only have it at night etc. With both my kids I took it away when i thought they were ready. My eldest she was 3 yrs old and my middle child at 2 yrs old which was about 6 months ago. She would be playing with it it etc and not really sucking it and she wasn't speaking properly. I took it away and told her it was gone. She had a meltdown for 45 min. Then slightly cried and asked for it for it for about 2 days, then she forgot about it. Everytime she mentioned it I would change the subject and distract her. I did the same for my eldest. Wish me luck for meltdown with my 3rd baby lol I don't think u should faf about with rewards etc and don't give in actually put it outside in the rubbish so u can't give it back to them. Good luck.

We really struggled with this one BIG time. DD1 used it to go to sleep up until she was 3. She only had it at bed time and then when we came back from Oz just after she turned 3. We just said you are a big girl now you dont need it ect. Took alot of talking and consolling but 3 days and she dosnt even think about it now. But before then we tried numerous times and to no avail. The dummy fairy, reward charts, bribes, loosing it ect. Nothing worked. My mum said she wont have it at 16 stop stressing and its true. Just restrict it to bed time and it dosnt hurt. DD has great teeth and speaks very well. Good luck.

All children have some sort of comfort attachment, be it a dummy, comforter, favourite teddy etc. they won't still have it when they are 16 :D so don't worry about it. Let them grow out of it at their own pace, they are only that little once. If it helps you, helps them, let it be. ;) If they get to 3 and still have them you could try leaving them out for Santa/Dummy Fairy etc, by then they have so much more understanding. We phased ours out while on holiday and being too busy looking at new surroundings etc, did it gradually over a couple of weeks. Good luck and don't worry about it........

I've been giving this some thought lately too... I came to the conclusion that I'm happy for her to keep it for the moment, but my plan is at 18 months of age she'll no longer have it except for sleeping (she has it in the car sometimes). Then at 2yrs I'll be taking it away completely. My plan is to have a Reward Chart for her to help achieve this (I'm assuming at 2yrs of age they can understand the concept of reward charts?). Good luck! :D

DS still sleeps with a dummy :( I was hoping he'd just grow out of it but he actually asks for it now at bedtime and got really upset when I was trying to get him to sleep in the pram the other day without it. Its just such a solid sleep cue (as in give dummy, eyes close, asleep within seconds) that I've been reluctant to take it away but I'm worried it will affect his teeth if I leave it too long. He only has it for sleep but given that he sleeps for 14 out of 24 hours that's quite a lot. he's only just hit 17 months and too young to get the idea of a dummy fairy etc, those who's children just lost interest or voluntarily gave it up (with or without bribe) what age were your kids when that happened?
