Stem cell/cord blood banking
Hi, sorry, I know there have been a number of other threads on this (which I have read), I'm just a little confused and looking for more guidance.
I've been reading up about the different companies recommended on here. I like the idea of having the sample stored in two different physical locations for security and the ones that I've come across that do this are Cells4Life (2 uk locations) and Cryo-save (Dubai and Belgium).
So the next question/differentiator is whether to go with someone that stores stem cells (I.e. depleted of red blood cells) (which most of them do) or whether to go with whole blood storage. I've read different theories in relation to each, those that extract the stem cells say its better because with whole blood red blood cells often burst on freezing and release harmful iron and other stuff and need more chemicals/preserving agents. The one that stores whole blood says that it's better because that means they store all the different cell types in the blood not just the CD34++ cells, so there may be more available uses in the future (they also claim others don't store whole blood to cut down on storage space). Which to believe?!
The other question is whether or not to store umbilical tissue in addition to blood/stem cells. There are a few places that offer this as an additional service but again I've read contradictory advice, some saying it gives access to additional cell types for potential future treatments, others saying that he technology for storing such tissue isn't really advanced enough yet so the tissue probably won't even be able to be used in the future if needed.
Any thoughts on the above?
I'm not looking to get into a debate on the benefits of cord blood storage vs delayed cord clamping, I am already aware of the arguments each way there.
