just to add, if your baby is being treated for thrush you should be too, whether you have symptoms or not. Hopefully your Dr was on to it with that and prescribed for you both.
thx uhad83 i will give that a try.
I have moved across from AR formula to comfort now instead. His reflux isn't as bad but he still has it, especially after BF.
On my way to the dr with him yesterday - day 6 of no poops he finally does one in the car. I had one very happy chappy greeting me when I opened the car door to get him out, he was beaming smiles at me all so proud of himself. LOL
I left the nappy on until just before we saw the Dr and gave it to her. They are running a couple of tests on it, as she believes from what I described to him with symptoms and how he settles, feeds etc that he is lactose intolarant. She also believes he has a trifecta of things with lactose intol, reflux and colic from everything I went through with her. She has now prescribed baby zantac for his reflux and to top it off he has thrush in his mouth - thank goodness i don't have it on my b**bs yet / that I know of (it isn't causing pain) coz that would be bye bye bf'ing days for me. I went through that with my first son for 8-14 weeks (8 weeks before anyone diagnosed it on both of us) and it was more painful than the drug free labour! I would cry almost every time I would have to feed DS1. So thankfully this dr has seen it and we have stuff to get rid of that too.
Results from poop should be back today or by saturday at the latest. Will keep you posted.
Yesterdays poop was much better consistency and it was 6 days of having swapped formula to comfort. She'd ideally like to see him go every 3 days and that same consitency for him to establish a regular movement which should help with his wind / colic too. We'll see. Fingers crossed... cos 45 mins - 2hrs sleep at night for me about 3 times a week is doing my head in.
Hi Aussiepup,
my baby is 18 weeks.and combination fed as well.....recently she had been passing stool every 4-5 days.she wasnt exactly constipated and if she was EBF i wouldnt have bothered about it at all. but someone gave me a suggestion that I add a few dates/dried apricots/prunes to my diet everyday(not to baby directly)...just a few and it will help the baby become regular.I tried it for a few days and I have to say my little one was passing stool almost everyday after that.u can give it a try if u wish since it doesnt involve giving anything directly to the baby...HTH and good luck!

Thx.
I have been to dr delphine, she is great. I have been meaning to email her and ask about the constipation.
I have tried prune juice and warm water with a lump of brown sugar.
Drs don't think he is dehydrated but he basically isn't getting enough water to his bowel to keep it soft. Dr loubser explained the consitency should be like you explained kiwispiers but his is thicker plus the even more solid clumps/lumps.
Edited to add:
Veredque - I don't know I could insert a suppository or been the tip of a thermometer that first doc told me to do. My mum tried that yesterday but with glows and vas aline on her pinky finger (she use to take me to dr for very same stuff as I was constipated baby, but she said she's never seen the lumps DS passed), anyway she did yesterday and he screamed his little head off and it was awful the scream. I'm normally a tough but caring cookie when it comes to stuff like that but for this I wasn't :(

If he was EBF I would say don't worry at all. Its normal quite after the newborn phase for EBF babies to only poop once a week and its not constipation, just them processing efficiently. My guy used to poop once every 8 days from when he was 12 weeks until almost 7 months when we started solids. His poo was like thick greek yoghurt and mustard colored, sometimes with little curdy bits in. Its also common for Drs [b'>not to know[/b'> that BF babies don't need to poop daily (some only go once every 14 days!) and to mistaken prescribe laxatives, suppositories etc. At that age they still make quite red faced strainy faces when they poop just from the effort of co-ordinating the muscles.
EFF babies can get constipated and usually do need to go daily due to the part of the cows milk that they can't digest fully so if you truly believe it to be constipation then maybe it is due to the chopping and changing between EBF and formula and a more consistent pattern might help his digetive system get used to it? I do think though that its quite possible that he is doing normal BF baby poo and your Drs are not understanding that, if you are in the right part of the UAE maybe you could go and see the famous Dr Delphine (Family Dr and LC all in one) for the most informed approach?

Hi
I went through this with our son, a few years back, and it was the formula that was the issue. Ideally your child should go each day, but you probably know that. I think there was too much casein in our son's first formula, and we also added flax oil, about a 1/2 tsp, to each bottle, for efa's. My midwife had told me about a great book, Super Immunity for Children, and the author extols the virtues of flax oil.
I'd not hesitate to switch formulas now, and also glycerin suppositories were a staple in our house. I even found that a qtip in the bum could bring things along sometimes.
Have you also tried diluted apple, or simply water? Could be some dehydration.
Best of luck, it's so stressful!
Hi all, DS2 is suffering big time with constipation and my heart is breaking listening to him scream when he passes wind or feels like he is going to poop. He goes every 3-5 days and dr (2 of them) have said he is too constipated. His poop looks like thick mash potato (mustard colour) with several round more solid clumps about the size of a Dirham that are black/greyish in colour.
He is on duphilac(?) and now taking 4mls per day but it is not changing anything. I've tried a little prune juice with warm water too but with his reflux he brings most of it back up straight away.
Not sure what else to do. Anyone else experience this with their LO?
DH is convinced there is something wrong with DS bowel internally but all research I've done and, second dr, all say that he is just constipated.
We are going to dr again tomorrow. But just wondering if anyone else has experienced and what did you do?
Some background on his feeding...
DS is combination fed, breast and formula due to the reflux. In past weeks I've tried full week of just breast feeding that was still 5 days before he pooped, 2 days of formula only and I expressed and stored milk he went both days (twice on one of these) then again 3rd day whei went back to mostly bf with only 2 night bottles of formula. Since then, he's been 3-5 days before he goes.
