How do I stop him?

We moved him to a big boy bed 4 weeks ago and his first 3 weeks in the bed he slept better than he ever did in his cot. This week however he is constantly getting out of his bed and coming to look for me. His door is shut so I always hear him opening the door. First night he was awake 1am to 4.20am doing it, i keep putting him back and telling him it's bedtime.
2nd night 1am to 2.30am. I was getting so tired though as his little bro (4mths) also demanded my attention for feeding. In the end at about 2.30am I told DS1 that if he got out again he was going to time out. Thankfully he stopped.

Tonight we've been going at it since 11 pm, the time out option hasn't worked so I found the keys and locked the door. We've had one screaming match for 15 mins, when he calmed down and called out to me no more tears, I opened the door and walked him back to bed. Ive also given him DS2 little glow night light... So far so good.

Is it a phase or do you think it's worth buying a proper lamp for him to keep on in his room... Think he is afraid in their?

TIA

Hi AussiePup You know your son better than anyone and what will motivate him. If you feel a star chart would work you could try using stickers of his favourite character, letting him choose them and explaining to him in a way that he will understand. I assume you just take him back to bed when he gets up, no chatting, eye contact etc. to make it as boring as possible. The Gro clock sounds a great idea too. I think if you persevere and are consistent each time he gets up it won't be long before he's back to his good sleeping habits. Although that won't help you in the short term :( I hope it improves soon.

Aussie Pup my sister has a 3 yr old and a new baby and she recently bought a Gro clock sleep trainer and it seems to have done the trick (if there's a moon they should stay in bed, when the sun appears on the clock they're allowed to get up!), although instead of getting out of bed my niece has started shouting from her room but it may help!

thx. Do you think at 2 he will get the idea of a star chart? yes we have the stair gate and have tried the hole leave the door open thing but he is a very ligth sleeper (takes after me) and is usually woken by the LO crying so hence for door shut (but door use to be shut before LO arrived too anyway. Perhaps it is just the change of it all having his little bro and then the new bed too.

Perhaps your son has realised you are up during the night with your new baby and feels like he is missing out on something. I'm sure you already have a good bedtime routine, but with the change of circumstances (new baby, new bed), it probably just needs gentle consistent reinforcement. Have you considered putting a stair gate up at the door, so you can leave the door open, but your child is still safe in his bedroom, it may stop him getting up to see what is going on. A little glow light is a great idea and is safe for little ones. You could try a Star Chart, giving him a star on the nights he stays in bed, which will focus on the behaviour you hoping to achieve. Good luck, it will get better.
