Hi Ladies,

I'm going to be 12 weeks very soon and I have suffered a miscarriage before after 12 weeks and have considered buying a fetal doppler to listen to baby to keep my mind at rest ... is this worth is as soon as 12 weeks? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi BananaJuice! I would be careful with the frequent Doppler use...there has been studies done that suggest that excessive Dopplers and ultrasounds do carry some risks to the proper development of the baby. I just recently read a good article on that, but of course can not find it now. Here is an other one that talks a bit about that: http://www.midwiferytoday.com/articles/ultrasound.asp I agree with Meagle, that it might actully add to your anxiety...and really if something would happen...would a Doppler really change anything? I am sorry about you being scared, try to trust your body. Women's bodies are amazing and know how to create little miracles that we call babies, mostly without much help. Just think that in a few weeks, you will be able to feel the baby's movements and hopefully that will help to ease the fear! Wishing you a great pregnancy!!!! This is really a personal decision. Honestly, I've had 3 miscarriages and now two children and it was really, really hard to do but when I stepped back and threw my hands up saying that what's going to happen will happen and I cannot control it, my pregnancies went much easier and less stressful. Personally, I think having a doppler would have only fed my anxiety and prevented me from achieving that state of peace. With that said, though, I know for a lot of other people they would really want the additional reassurance of having a doppler to check. I have a friend who really wanted/needed that and purchased her own. Best wishes for a healthy pregnancy.
