Abu Dhabi Announces New Rules for Students Returning to the Classroom

Parents are allowed to choose between in-class attendance or distance learning for their children

Abu Dhabi’s Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), issued new policies and guidelines for private school pupils and staff this new school year. The announcement was posted on their official Twitter page.

In addition to compulsory precautionary measures and sterilization procedures, students who wish to attend face-to-face classes can do so gradually.

Pupils from KG1/FS2 to Grade 5/Year 6 will return to in-person classes on the first day of school on Sunday, August 30.

For students in all other grades, they will return to in-class lessons four weeks later.

According to ADEK, the directive will enable schools to monitor and evaluate how kids adapt and respond to the Covid-19 safety measures. The new guidelines also aims to help schools plan accordingly for the return of other students.

How will Abu Dhabi schools look like?

There are five reopening models for Abu Dhabi private schools:

  • Full day in-class learning
  • Half day in-class learning
  • Alternating days
  • Alternating weeks
  • Hybrid model

Students may experience a mix of these models for the 2020/2021 academic year.

Classroom sizes for all Abu Dhabi schools have a max capacity of 15 students only, with a mandatory physical distance of 1.5 metres between each other.

Pupils who are 12 years old and above, as well as private school employees, must take a Covid-19 test to prove they are virus-free before they return to school.

Previously, ADEK announced that all returning students and staff must undergo a Covid-19 test before they come back to class. However, the compulsory virus swab test only applies to students above 12 years old and school faculty.

All staff and students over six years old must wear a face mask at all times. Daily temperature checks will be conducted on the premises.

Sports, physical education, and extracurricular activities are suspended until further notice.

For break times, these will alternate to make sure students maintain social distancing.
