Considering moving to Dubai with my boyfriend (Emirates pilot)career options & staged move from UK

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some honest advice and ideally experiences from people who have been in a similar position.

My boyfriend is considering applying to Emirates as a pilot, which would obviously mean relocating to Dubai if successful. We’re in a serious long-term relationship but we’re not married, and I have a very established life and career in the UK, so I’m trying to research what this could realistically look like for me rather than simply following him and hoping everything works itself out.

Firstly, I’d really like to hear from anyone who moved to Dubai with an unmarried partner working for Emirates, particularly a pilot. How did you manage visas/residency, accommodation and Emirates partner benefits? Did you eventually get your own employment visa, and did being unmarried cause any practical difficulties?

Career-wise, I have around 15 years’ experience as cabin crew in the UK, including a senior cabin crew/management role, and I also have experience working in cabin crew recruitment alongside my flying role.

I’m currently starting my own social media management business, and I’m also really interested in property/real estate, although I don’t have professional property experience yet.

One thing I know about myself is that I would hate to leave a flexible aviation career to sit in a conventional 9–5 office or generic customer-service job. I’m used to unusual hours, having different days every day, being around people, being up and about and having a reasonable amount of flexibility and time off. I’d ideally like something with good earning potential where I can use the skills I already have without completely sacrificing that lifestyle.

I’d therefore love to hear about careers or opportunities in Dubai that might suit that background/personality. Property particularly interests me, as do recruitment, social media, hospitality/travel and potentially self-employed/freelance work. I’m very open-minded about doing something completely different if the opportunity and earning potential are there.

I’m also considering a gradual move rather than immediately quitting my UK career.

My current thought would be to reduce my UK flying contract to around 50% and spend perhaps 6–12 months travelling back and forth to Dubai as much as my roster allows. That would let us experience the reality of the distance, allow me to spend proper periods living in Dubai rather than just holidaying there, and give me time to network, explore jobs/business opportunities and decide whether Dubai is somewhere I genuinely want to live before permanently leaving a 15-year career.

If everything felt right and I found a viable career/income there, I’d then look at making the permanent move.

Has anyone done something similar where one partner moved first and the other transitioned gradually?

I’d particularly love to hear from:

• Partners of Emirates pilots/crew who moved out later
• Unmarried couples who navigated the move
• Brits who left established UK careers for Dubai in their 30s/40s
• People who moved into Dubai property with no previous real-estate experience
• Anyone working flexibly/self-employed in social media, recruitment, property or hospitality
• Anyone who tried a long-distance/part-time transition before permanently relocating

I’d really appreciate both positive and negative experiences. I don’t need convincing that Dubai can be exciting. I’m more interested in the reality: what worked, what didn’t, what opportunities genuinely exist, what the job market is like, and what you wish you’d known before making the move.

Thanks!
