A Little Dirt Is Actually Good For Your Child

One of the many memories that most people have from when they were children is that of being dirty... all the time. 

And while parents everywhere to this date lose sleep over all the germs that children take on while playing in the dirt, research now shows that a little dirt is actually good for your child. 

For those of you who are used to believing that a child can never be 'too clean' and that the only way to avoid diseases is through over-sanitization, here are five reasons why it's okay to let your child play in the dirt:

1. It builds immunity

Did you know that regular dirt contains powerful soil-based-organisms, which are beneficial in providing the right boost of immunity to our bodies and making children less prone to illnesses? As children are exposed to dirt, their body recognises and eventually fights bacteria that cause harm to the body.

2. It makes children responsible

A child who is exposed to dirt understands that it is meant to remain outdoors. Children are noticeably more prone to washing hands and leaving their dirty clothes and shoes outside if they interact with dirt on a regular basis. 

3. It teaches them about nature

Children have curious minds, and the more they are exposed to something, the more they want to learn about it. Letting your child get their hands dirty teaches them a great deal about plants, animals, microorganisms and the even different types of soil! 

4. It makes children fearless

There is an inexplicable sense of rawness that comes with playing in the dirt, and research has shown that children who are not afraid to get dirty often tend to show signs of leadership and ownership in later stages of their life. 

5. It makes them active and happier

Have you ever seen a child who's sad on the playground? Children love being in the dirt as it makes them feel one with nature. Kids who grow up interacting with dirt daily are found to be more active and robust than kids who are over-sanitized.
