Hi!

We are probably moving from Sydney to Abu Dhabi in January 2013. While we are looking forward to it there seems to be an issue with schools. Our daughter will have finished year 2 by the end of the year. I have contacted Raha International school (random choice - no idea if it a good school... ) and was advised that the government does not allow kids to jump up half a year. So she has to start year 2 again which means she will be a year older than everyone else (grade 2 is 7+ / she will be almost 8,5 years). Also when we go back she will be a school year below all her friends and more than a year older than everyone else as she was born just after the cut off date.

Does anyone have experience with moving kids from the Australian system to Abu Dhabi?
Also any advice on schools would be great!! So hard to choose a school from overseas.I am reading horror stories of long waiting lists which should be a huge problem trying to move in the middle of the school year I guess...
Apparently the Australian International School does not have any vacancy for grade 2 according to their website. I have tried to contact them via email but all emails have bounced back so far.

Thanks so much!!

We moved from OZ to here in Jan a few years back and DS had to go into grade 8 although he had finished it, so 1 1/12 yrs of same grade. Don't forget school starts back early Jan so they won't have much hols. Why are you not moving over earlier, join your DH now!

I agree with bb2 - if Al Yasmina has offered a place take it - I'm sure your DS will also get a place very soon. You will love the school

Thanks everyone! DH already in AD and the rest of us probably moving in December now so just after finishing school over here. I have contacted Al Yasmina and they might have a place for DD but not DS. I was told DD would be in year 4 (At Raha International it was year 2) After reading all the comments I am quite excited about Al Yasmina - finger crossed!! once you get a place in a school here your sibling will move up the list..... if you get a place from yasmina then take it... the other one will move up the list people do not always come back after xmas break etc and they do not inform the school, so its quite difficult for them to know sometimes.

on the move2012 are you def moving here in January? My youngest 2 children moved from NSW to AD in late Feb. DD had just started yr 4 and DS yr 8 - when we moved here they started in yr 4 and yr 8 at their new school. They attended Al Yasmina Aldar academy school (British system) - it is a FAB school with great teachers and facilities. FS1 to yr 13.

i hear that Aussie kids fit in well to the British system, you will find all the schools basic info, costs etc on this site, together with their individual web addresses. yep lots of ozzie kids in brit curriculum, they just have to repeat part of a year so they are always the oldest in the class etc.

Hi On the Move! An 8,5 year old would usually be in year 4 in the British system. As mentioned try The Pearl, Al Yasmina, Brighton and BSAK. Al Yasmina is on the mainland the rest are on the island. Just go to each website and give them all a try. People do leave mid year and spaces do become available. I recommend you first get a school place then find a place to live to make your life easier regarding school runs if you can. That said, many people regularly commute on and off island (or further) with no issues. Good luck to you.

The Australian school is only Australian in name - avoid it, if you can! Try one of the British curriculum schools, you may find it better with regards the years. But as BellaUK says, upon return to your country, you will find them much more reasonable and keen to put the kids in their age related grades. In the middle East, the education system is very inflexible and sometimes kids fall through the gaps and can end up being a couple of years older than the other kids in their grades, through no fault of their own. Good British schools are BSAK, the Aldar Schools (Pearl, Al Yasmina), Brighton College.... Good luck!

This doesn't really anwer your Q but a Kiwi friend of mine had this problem when they moved to Dubai several years ago, the oldest had to repeat part of that school year because they were not allowed to go ahead and skip the first half of the 'next' school year up, whilst not thrilled they had no choice. Now after going back to NZ, the kids have gone back into the NZ school years they would have been in for their age and have not been required to go in lower based on their Dubai school year, and in terms of curriculum and ability are ahead of their peers in NZ.
