We went there more than 2 years ago, so I can't remember the website that we used. We rented a 2 bedroom apartment for a week and stayed among the Venetian instead of the tourist area. Can't remember the exact area but I think it was the Jewish Ghetto, Cannaregio. It was near Santa Maria dei Miracoli. It was great experience. We didnt cook other than preparing food for DD who was 18 months then. The place that we stayed was within walking distance to the water bus. We used the bus a bit but walked almost everywhere. We found some good restaurants but I would say that Venice really doesn't represent Italy when it comes to good food. My only regret was I didnt get to see Brad Pitt who was there at that same time :( Anyway, you can easily do search on holiday apartment for rental. edited by blimey on 01/04/2011

we stayed at ca'riccio in feb, teeny but comfortable. not for six though maybe :p you do have to climb up steps to get to it so pack light :) and venice itself is so teeny, you can walk just about anywhere comfortably, so location shouldn't be that big an issue .. our hotel was close to the piazza san marco (five min walk), but far (20 min walk) from the bus station for example. and the 'walk' is more of a stroll anyways :)

Havent been for ages so cant recommend anywhere specific to stay, but everything is within walking distance as the place is so tiny. If you havent been before, I'm happy to send you an email I put together for friends after I'd been a couple of times - it just outlines the things you need to do and see (what not to waste your time and money on!), and what you can get for free and what you need to book... Let me know if you'd like it.
