We've been asked by Greek friends where in Dubai they can buy a pearl necklace (I'm presuming not fake, wondering if they mean cultured or the other sort (whatever they're called)). Excuse my ignorance, but is Dubai really known as the place to buy a pearl necklace (my immediate thought was why isn't she asking for gold?) and if so, where could they find one, please?

A friend of my mothers bought a string at the blue souk in Sharjah, had them valued in Aberdeen and was told she had got a bargain. No idea which store though but if you know something about pearls it might be worth a visit.

Warched a show on the Dubai pearl industry sometime back-if memory serves me correctly genuine natural Dubai pearls are now rare-and extremely expensive and usually bought singly-I think any necklace you could buy that was in any way affordable would be of imported cultured pearls-but I may be wrong-or your friends may be very rich! The museum has a display on pearl diving if you are interested too

The G&D park yes as there is a carpark behind it. The Gold Souk can be a total headache to park near.

Oh, thanks for the info, I didn't know anything about the pearl diving (obviously!). What are pearls strung on, then? (Clearly jewellery is my specialist subject..) Is it easy to park near the old Gold Souk and the Gold & Diamond Park?

dubai trade was initial built up on pearl diving... this was the real trade that dubai was known for, this faded when people started began to be able to produce pearls.

Considering Dubai's main industry used to be pearl diving it's extremely appropriate! I'd head to the old Gold Souk, you'll find loads of shops there selling them.
