I have one (between the 5th and 6th vertebrae) and am a bit freaked out about what the doc has just told me including about potential surgery ... particularly if it happens over here.

I'd love to hear from anyone else who's had this and hopefully recovered well!

TIA.

Sorry for the late reply - no, husband had surgery back in the UK in 1996 before we moved here mid 2000's. He said the most pain he had post surgery was from where they'd taken the bone graft from his hip, not from the surgery in his neck, and that only lasted a couple of weeks or so anyway. Have to say it was fascinating (once everything was all over and he had the all clear) to see the X-rays and the MRI scans. Scary stuff.

My Dh did and had the choice between surgery and bed rest, he opted for bed rest, that was with a top Neurosurgeon in the UK quite a while back.

Hi twocats, it would be great to hear more about the op and how bad you were before you actually had the op. Also which hospital and surgeon too. edited by Jupiter on 11/01/2011

Jupiter My C5/C6 prolapsed Easter last year, and i feel your pain and remember it well. Had a great surgeon here and had a replacement disc op in May here in Dubai and all is well again now. Some may think I was crazy to have surgery here but I was confident with the surgeon and in the end thats what matters, well in my opinion anyway. Happy to talk if you have any questions.

Mine's quite severe ... apparently. It's 'gone' 3 times over the past 12 months and I have pins and needles down my right arm. The pain and pins and needles have since subsided, only until next time though. This is when the doc mentioned about surgery. I'm just trying to find out more about the surgery because it worries me over here, particularly with the risks of this op involved. A neck brace is far better than surgery though. Hope it's going well.

Blimey, your DH sounds like he had it bad. Recovery sounds pretty speedy though. Did the surgery take place over here in Dubai?

I have something called hernieted cervical disk. I think this is what you are discribing thou i am not sure. Anyhow, I was scared when I heard this from my doc. too but he didn't go so far as to mention surgery..but maybe it depends on the severity of the case. How far is yours? Do you have pain in your arms? How is it manifesting? I went to the doc. cause I had pain in my upper part of my back since I was pregnant and after delivery and I had MRI done . This is when we discovered the hernieted disk. Curently, I am taking some medication and have a neck brace I need to wear 15 min. every morning and evening for a year. I was very sad to hear I have this from a young age , I am 32, but I need to deal with it.

Husband had this back in 1996. Discs between C5, C6 & C7 had pretty much disintegrated and the matter was getting into the spinal canal putting pressure on the spinal cord which he was told may lead to paralysis. He had surgery within days of the diagnosis. This involved clearing out the spinal canal and taking a bone graft from his hip to fuse the three discs together. He was out of hospital in five days, had to wear a neck collar for six weeks and wasn't allowed to go to work for six weeks. All has been fine ever since.
