Silly question, but do you guys who stay just muddle through with young children and do your best to entertain them without any other little friends around, or do you look for advertised events? Hi- I am about to move to Dubai and started a thread on the subject: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=140118 There are playgroups/events I believe, but in August (which is Ramadan this year) it seems best to have some friends lined up in order to have at-home playdates and not have to worry about eating/drinking in public (also keeps costs down vs paying for indoor play areas). I do get the impression that there will be a fair number of "little friends" around-- I will be there for part of the summer and am counting on EW to help me find them! edited by Tartiflette on 26/03/2011

Help, please. I'm just hearing that you have to go from apartment to mall, and am wondering where to look for things to do.

I think Ramadan is 1st Aug, or very close - it's pretty much all of August this year, with Eid holidays on 31st for 3 days, or that's what I read somewhere...

Last summer DD and I were away for 8 weeks! I dont think we will be doing that again. I feel its not fair on DH he says he doesnt mind but I dont believe him. So I might go for a short time and then back for his B'day and our wedding anniversary which is in August. Hopefully will try and do a bit of both short holiday to the UK and then another when we back and spend time with DH somewhere in UAE or abroad...will see.. BTW anyone know what date ramadan commence?? edited by Sham on 24/03/2011

will be staying for the summer - my first desert summer - am I mad...? Have a 4 year old, will have to get creative... Just a question, but the people who do go home for the summer, or go elsewhere, where do they stay? Do they still have homes in their home country? We never owned ours in the UK so we have nowhere to stay, and friends and family are scattered all over the place and have no room to put up a family of 3 for any length of time. How do people manage to stay away for so long without going bankrupt? Or am I doing something wrong...?! Lol! No, just different circumstances I guess. We rent out our UK property and stay with my parents in the summer months. Mostly, everyone that I know does the same.

Not to mention the GCC residents' rates at hotels in the region. Oh yes, I forgot to mention that. Had a blast last year at The Arabian summer Palaces at Al Qasr. Had a week there and it was less than half the normal price plus an upgrade to a villa on the beach. Bliss.

We will be staying for most of it....our first Dubai summer although we will be escaping for our first summer ramadan. I have 4 DD's and when we arrived last year I told them that we weren't going to be visiting Ski Dubai, Aquarium, Kidzania etc etc because I wanted to save them for the summer so we'd have things to do...........I think I am up for an expensive summer!! that made me laugh...it's my excuse for not going to those places too and saving it all up for summer treats :) Went away for the first time last summer for 6 weeks and HATED it, couldnt stand being away from himself, so we're back to the norm of hanging out here and then taking a 2 week break somewhere all together again.

We don't all go away ... this will be our seventh summer in Dubai. And like Mrs Mopp we enjoy the quieter roads, malls etc, too. Not to mention the GCC residents' rates at hotels in the region.

Never knew people went away for the summer until I started reading this forum.... I hate being away from DH so wont be doing that. Same here, the kids miss their DH too much so generally we stay. Year on year theres the same thread leading up to the summer too r.e. the cats away the mice will play, that will be next...

I love being here in the summer. Empty malls Empty roads Empty play areas Empty restaurants Its peaceful and relaxed, how it was when i first moved here, but back then that was all year round. Normally here all summer except for 2 weeks. This year away twice for 2 x weeks.

I'll be here - this will be my first summer in Dubai as I'll only be moving out in April. I'll also be heavily pregnant - should be fun :) edited by LAD on 23/03/2011
