can anyone recommend a good book and where to find it on Dubai for a guest to purchase to take home with them? Something very informative regarding history, how is today, interesting facts etc.

Ooops, my bad for the misspelling of the surname - sorry about that, I even typed it wrong as I was looking at this page on Amazon :( http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dubai-Story-Worlds-Fastest-City/dp/1848870094/ref=pd_ybh_1?pf_rd_p=138755991&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_t=1501&pf_rd_i=ybh&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=0BJXXCRVPFPR55TMPW8H BEG, I know, it doesn't look anything much, does it, but husbad keeps telling me to read it and coming out with snippets from it - I really must get down to reading it (I've downloaded silly stuff on to my Kindle for the mo and always read that sort of thing first!).

The author spells his name with a K, Jim Krane (not being pedantic here, just know the staff at Borders will try and spell it with a C" and the same book is also published as City of Gold: Dubai and the dream of capitalism - think one version is a reprint but they are the same book. HTH

I'm reading it at the moment, and surprisingly it's a real page turner! Some fascinating snipits that spring to mind: - Microsoft were incentivised to join internet city with a 50 year free lease. Slavery wasn't abolished in this region until the late 60's. Once the UAE was formed many went on to become Emirati citizens. Sheikh Mohammed is the most prolific purchaser of thorougbred horses in the world. Highly recommended!

You could try Jim Crane's "Dubai: The Story of the World's Fastest City" - I've not read it myself but have heard from two different sources that it's an excellent, interesting and informative book.
