That your driving licence has to be renewed every 10 years! I thought it was valid until you were 70!!!! You now have to submit a new photo every 10 years! I didn't know and was surprised to receive a reminder in the post! Thought I would share so that if you are planning to drive in the summer in the UK you should check out your licence to make sure it's still OK.

I think that if you originally did your driving test in the UK and have already held a UK licence, you will be able to get it back when moving back to the UK without having to do the test again. We had a similar situation-- Country A did not recognise licences from Country B but if you could show that you had done the driving test in a country whose licences ARE recognised (and subsequently had swapped it for the Country B licence), they would give you a licence without having to re-do the test.

Yep, I found out the hard way too!!! The DVLA sent a fax confirming my UK licence so at least I have managed to get a UAE one however it was made very clear by the person I spoke to at DVLA that I would no longer be able to have a UK licence. I've just checked the DVLA website, and you can drive on your UAE one in the UK for a year, after which you have to take a test (the UAE one is not transferable). The moral of this story is that if you have a UK address, please keep the photocard updated!!! I wish I had! So are you saying you have to resit the UK test when you return to the UK having had a UAE licence and your photocard (UK) has run out? I really don't believe this to be correct as you UK DL is still valid as a licence held for many more years.

it makes me wonder about the insurance though....having said that, when i am put on my relatives insurance the company is told that i am visiting from abroad and not resident and they still insure me...we are transparent about the whole thing. If you're temporarily being put on a valid insurance policy and are clear about being a non-resident, then it's fine. However, if you were non-resident and took out a normal insurance policy, it would be void in the case of a claim because all the usual insurers (Directline, Morethan, etc...) assume that the main policy holder is a permanent UK resident. as for the old green thing, i thought it was compulsory to have the photocard? but of course, only if resident there :-/ Yes, I think they were phased out 5-10 years ago!

Thought I would share so that if you are planning to drive in the summer in the UK you should check out your licence to make sure it's still OK. and that you are not allowed to use your british licence when you live abroad, so there is no point in renewing your photo licence. you should use your foreign licence when you drive in the uk. if you update your licence when non residence you are doing so illegally.

Here's a thought - say you were in an accident on a driving licence you had obtained while living here, and had basically lied on the application - would that count as driving without a valid licence???? And therefore would you car insurance be invalid?

you can actually still hire at heathrow with the expired photocard depending how the hire company look at it. (i did it) its the photo that expires...i checked (phone) before i went back, either way you still have UAE license you can hire on...its in english. (for the record, it was Sixt that i used) There are ways around it if you have family there but you are supposed to live at the address on your licence in the UK so you are supposed to be UK resident. However given the UAE authorities didnt want to transfer my full bike licence onto my UAE licence, i am definitely not surrendering my UK one....paid good money and time to to get that class!
