We’re considering moving to either Dubai or Bahrain in just over a year but I have some questions...

We’ve previously lived in Bahrain and I grew up in KSA. Bahrain has a very convenient social arena, a community that’s easy to slot into and we loved that as did our son. We were members of the Dilmun Club and went there most weekends. We really miss it.

Is there anything like that in Dubai or are people more likely to socialise at one another’s homes? If there are similar set ups are they extortionate? Rough membership fees and info about what they’re like would be appreciated.

Also In Bahrain we lived on a compound but I didn’t find the community spirit there to be as nice as in Saudi. Perhaps because there aren’t clubs there like in Bahrain so your compound is like your family. However it didn’t matter because we socialised outside of the compound.

Is compound living rare in Dubai?

I’ve read a fair bit online but I’d love the perspective of actual people...thanks.

There are compound villa communities on the Jumairah side ( along alwasal and jumeirah roads)...offering shared pools n gardens. But the quality of each is different and you will have to look hard to find the right one

I moved into Dubai Hills about 3 months back and will highly recommend the community. Very centrally located with 3 near by schools. The community is not as mature though as Arabian Ranches and Emirates Living.

I've lived here 6 years and never come across "compound living" in Dubai - there's a lot of well-established, gated communities that are favoured by expats here but not in the same sense that you may have seen in KSA. You'll find most, if not all, communities have their own FB groups you can join and meet-up with other expats living in the area. There are lots of recreational clubs, like golf, polo etc. that you may join, and also places like the Arabian Ranches and Emirates Hills (Springs, Meadows, Lakes) have "members clubs" and centers... For example The Lakes have Fitness First and Reform as their central location, which has a supermarket also etc. Simply put - it's very easy to get out and mingle in Dubai!!
