Hello ladies, I'm going on a 10 days trip with DD and DH in may and wondering what I will do with my live in nanny. I trust her and she is a good girl but after all the horror story i heard about maid bringing people at home, I don't know if its ok to leave her alone at home, but I don't have any other alternative. What do you do ladies in this case?

We are fortunate to have someone we are confident in. We leave her and we check on her ourselves via phone. this is what we thought Holly :( Sometimes things are not what they seem.

We leave our houseboy and have done for the past 11 years he looks after my hounds for me while we are away. I do send someone round unannouced everytime and did have my sister staying while we've been away just to make sure nothing is going on (or not going on!), we call also. Plus I don't tell him the exact dates we will be back, this helps keep them on their toes, infact if you said a few days before that could be an idea. Just to add, I don't think you can ever really trust someone 100% my DH's family used to live in Africa they had a great driver for 10 years, untill one holiday they came back and found him gone along with the Merc! edited by JShepherd on 16/04/2011

Lock the rooms you don't want her to have access to.... Ie you bedrooms etc, if you can't lock the door, get locks fitted, you don't these these rooms cleaned when they aren't being used, she won't have a need to go in. Plus you could place items in there for safety/security etc. Give a friend a key who can pop in unexpectedly to check things and to see if she is ok and needs anything. Make sure she has someone nearby's phone number in case of emergency. Go and enjoy your break.

Can you arrange to have a friend or neighbour pop in a few times un announced? This is what we will be doing for our holiday, friends will have keys and will come to check up on house and dogs (read maid, lol), she knows already. We didnt do this last time and came home to a few surprises so wont be making the same mistake again.
