in the desert alongside Academic City road between Mirdif and 44? There is a bit fenced off area with little traditional style stick huts. Was wondering if this is some sort of annual event and what it is?

I love driving along there on a Thursday night and seeing all the families having bonfires! and they're still there early Friday morning as well, the other sight you'll see around Mirdif very early Friday morning is the boys dropping off the hired party 'boys' at the petrol stations, nice hair/makeup/high heels etc

Ah thanks KIF. I thought it was probably an annual thing but was intrigued by the boom gate to keep people out. It looks today like they have set up some stalls too. Its all in Arabic so I couldn't read what it was all about. I love driving along there on a Thursday night and seeing all the families having bonfires!

That camp gets installed every DSF. It is indeed a desert camp which is a part of the DSF promotion.

Think it might be something to do with DSF... You might find some info on their web site...

we saw this on our way to the plant souk, DH said it's probably a desert safari camp for tourists or for some local families to use at the weekend, tempting to go at night and see whats going on!
