I checked mOe C4 today and then Lulu (al Barsha) but didn't find any.

Does anyone know where I can purchase them? Or are they called something different here and that's why I'm having trouble???

Could one also use the flowers from a hibiscus plant? I have a few hibiscus plants with red flowers in the garden, could I use these flowers (dried) to make tea, or is this a different variety?

Found it this time at C4 -- just where you said, CA, big spice bins -- and labeled Karkadé, evelyn2000, just as you instructed! Thanks to everyone for the tips -- I NEVER would have found it on my own! edited by amkcbrandon on 18/10/2012

Oh sounds lovely (both the tea and the Margarita, LOL). I have one of those beautiful arabic insulated pots I could serve the iced tea from. Going to do that for my next morning tea. Thank you for sharing. Now I'll be hunting for a stock too!!

Thanks, ladies! Looks like I'll be off to Geant this week -- or try C4 again, I guess I just missed it! I use mine to make a strawberry hibiscus margarita -- also a very refreshing summer drink! ;)

You can drink it hot too - like a herbal tea. I put a couple of cloves in when I make it hot.

We make a very refreshing drink using karkadet . Just bring a saucepan of water to boil, add a handful of dried hibiscus flowers simmer for 5 minutes, sieve and add sugar to taste. When cool place in the fridge. Very refreshing drink in the Summer and in Ramadan when breaking the fast

Can I ask what they are used for? I like cooking, so would like to learn a little more...

It is in bags in Aswaaq and in C4 in the big spice bins, they are purplish dried flowers.

Karkadé (pronounced /ˈkɑrkədeɪ/ kar-kə-day) This is how they cal it in Arabic countries. I used to buy it from spices section in Geant.

Geant usually have hibiscus on the open dried spice counter area near fruits and veg. They may also have packets of it on the prepack spice shelves, those should be marked hibiscus. Not sure what they call it on the open counter but the staff should know if you ask for it.
