Hi, Ladies,
did anyone have to take driving lessons to be allowed to drive in Dubai? I have an 11 y.o. driver's license from Russia and as far as I understand I have to take classes and pass tests for the UAE permit, but not the full course. How long can it take and cost? (Haven't found any fees on the websites of RTA) Any experience with Belhasa driving school at Jebel Ali maybe? Thanks!

I can fully recommend Candy at Emirates Driving Institute in al Quoz. She is fantastic and helped me as a complete novice pass my test in one go! edited by muurtje on 03/01/2013 Could you tell me a bit more about Candy's way of teaching as I might be transferring my file from Al Qusais to Al Quoz just for her :)

Alemania - you can do 4 x 1/2 hour lessons in one go - so each session is 2 hours long. You can do this more than once a week - DD had 2 x 2 hr lessons each week and learnt from scratch with Emirates. That way you'll be through it in under 4 weeks if you pass the test, less if you can do more sessions each week. Good luck!

Thank you for the detailed answers, ladies. It seems each case is dealt with differently. 20 classes, 2 per week...It's gonna take more than 2 months to finish this...really a headache, not looking forward to this at all! Just one more question: does one have to translate the existing driving license into Arabic and let the consulate certify it?

Hi Alemania, I have a French driving licence (got it 12 years ago), but as I am not a French national I had to repass my driving licence here in Dubai. It was quite confusing as you never get a complete straight forward answer even when calling the RTA. I used Belhasa Driving Institute in Al Quoz. When you first register with them they have to "open a file" for you at the RTA: they will ask you for copies of passport, residency visa, driving licence, NOC from your sponsor (husband). this cost 160 Dhs and it can take up to a week, although for me they didnt come back to me before 2 weeks only to say that the RTA did not accept the copies I submitted! so I went to their desk in Mall of Emirates to take back my "file" and process it directly with their main Belhasa office in Al Quoz and the RTA located onsite. (the RTA was very helpful and accepted my application with no question). I was told I needed to take 2 hours of theory lessons (1hour before the theory test and 1 after the theory test), pass the theory test and a driving test. Once you finally "open your file" with the driving institute, then the institute will issue you a learning permit that you have to take with you everytime you take any driving lesson (if you have any). They will give you the time schedule for you lesson and your RTA book. They might also book your theory test on the same day. I think the total cost was about 1300dh and all in all I got my licence withing 2 weeks (from the actual registration to the day I pass my driving licence) But I have to admit that all this registration process was very confusing as you are send from one desk to another, only to go back to the same desk again and again,... very frustrating!!! keep patience and always stay polite: that's the key. Also, I advise you to go to the main office of the Driving Institute (of your choice), don't go through the desks they have in malls. It will be much quicker and clearer. Good Luck!!!!

Thanks! yes, u have to take driving classes and pass the test inorder to drive in UAE. since u already have ur country's license, u should take 20 classes from authorized driving Institute. Not sure about Belhasa , but iam yet to join Emirates Driving Institute. The cost was about 4500AED. 2 classes each week. Mine are weekend classes so cost is more. If you take classes during weekdays it'll be less Hope this helps
