My MiL (mid sixties) is due in the next week or so for nearly three weeks and will want to be shown a good time! She has been to Dubai once before but we had only been here 6 weeks when she arrived and basically we didn't know our ar$e from our elbow ....

We need to do something most days and have the Entertainer Family and Fine Dining books. As we will be paying for everything (grr grr) I would like your fab suggestions on what to do on the 'cheap' as we are moving house a few days after she leaves which has taken most of our spare cash!

So what fab, yet cheap, things can you suggest?

We are planning:
a day trip to Jebel Hafeet
Dubai fountains
Burj Khalifa
Abra ride on the creek
Aquarium
and a couple of voucher dinner evenings out

.....but what else can we do? She's not keen on desert safari/dolphins/the beach etc!

Thanks all!

If you do go to Abu Dhabi for the Grand Mosque, maybe go to the Falcon Hospital as well? Also, Global Village, and you can 'accidentally get lost' for a few hours....

Sharjah Light Festival is Feb 10-18. I don't think there is any charge, but I'm not sure.

Is it the jazz festival next week too? That might be fun if she likes music. I'm 100 per cent sure my MIL thinks we're loaded and can afford it, - which is so far from the truth it's not funny - whereas the world owes her a living and she's so hard done by, so she thinks we ought to treat her. We paid for her flight last time with DH's air miles (he promised her this as a birthday present without my knowledge!) and when she was complaining about how expensive everything is here, he pointed out she hadn't paid for her flight so she should treat herself. Her response? 'Well, you didn't pay for it either!" Yes love, apart from the tax of 400dhs. Thanks. Ungrateful cow.

I heard on the radio this morning there's some sort of sound and light show in Wafi to do with DSF. That might be worth a viewing. Was a bit stressed at the time so can't remember all the details, but it pinged into my brain that it'd be something to do with my parents. And presumably it's free. Have the same issues in the coming weeks with my M&D, ie. knowing what to do with them third time round - lovely to have them stay though, but 2 weeks will definitely be enough. Fortunately the MIL can't come to stay, EVER!!

Like the chicken and the road lol Do you have children? How about a picinic in Safa park or just a stroll around or you could even get her on one of those bikes :) ours didn't have very good breaks - haha If you have kids - you could go to the Al Ain Zoo or the Sharjah Wildlife centre Go for a drive to Hatta fort hotel for lunch? Have a look on timeout.com as there might be lots of free shows/events for the shopping festival

At least this time we didn't pay for the flight .......! We should start a competition to see who can guess how many times your MIL will mention that in her 3 week visit ;)

Like your style DubaiCat! It's a long and boring story the MiL one .... but to quote 'you're so lucky', 'he's got a good job' etc etc yes we've heard it all before. At least this time we didn't pay for the flight .......!

Encourage her to play chicken on Sheikh Zayed Road?! :D Last time the woman whose son I unfortunately married was here she went on a walk 'round the souks and took an abra ride then had some food at Bastakiya Nights restaurant. It was too hot/too busy/too dirty/whatever but I think it's a nice idea for the less ungrateful among MILs. We shelled out for everything last time because my MIL is as tight as a wet knot. I think we must be sister-in-laws.

Hmmm, fun and reasonable things to do with my mother-in-law. If the Bateaux Dubai dinner cruise is in the Entertainer that's lovely too. You're a good woman for paying for it all. We shelled out for everything last time because my MIL is as tight as a wet knot but I will not be spending a fil next time.

What about Meydan on a Thursday evening, I think it's free of a night time. Afternoon T at Platos in Atlantis, vouchers in the Family Entertainer.
