I have a working visa here in Dubai. I am afraid that I will not be able to convert my SA Drivers License into a Local License as my passprt and drivers license are not from the same country. Has anyone got a similar case? And managed to get a Local Drivers License? Thanks, Empie

I have a Canadian passport and a Hugnarian license. Unfortunately, Hungary is one of the countries that doesn't qualify for just transfering the license to a UAE one so I must do 20 lessons, a signal test and a driving exam to get my UAE license, this after 16 yrs of driving.. hilarious! not sure if S-A is exempt from lessons, if so, then you'll have no problems. Actually, you can opt for the VIP lessons.. where you simply take the written test and the driving test and then you get your license. It costs more, but will save you the time and effort and hassle of doing 20 lessons +the book classes. DH did this and it was totally worth it!

Thanks, Empie I have the same combination.... no problems, straight swop... although when they translated Holland to Arabic, and back into English, it came back as Poland... so now my UAE drivers license says i'm from Poland!

Thanks AliSmart, that is a great tip! Do you by any chnace remember the location of this RTA Office near the airport. Woudl you remember what documents you were required to bring along? I guess photos are taken there so no need to bring these along. Thanks ever so much! Feel alot more confident now! and it also I believe helps that I am 7 months pregnant, they may want to help me quicker:))

Hi I have a South African License and a British passport and I had no issues. Mine was even more complicated in that my SA license had actually expired (I did apply to get a new one when at home but they lost the finger prints etc after about 9 months....) I went to 3 or 4 different RTA offices and they all refused to transfer it over as it had expired, I then went to the one near the airport which has a ladies only section. They took all my paperwork and went to the supervisor who after a bit of back and forth signed the papers and approved it all. I would go to that RTA office with the ladies only little room, they were super helpful. Good luck! I went there too, they were superhelpful, got everything done ahead of everyone else, done in half an hour. OK; my licence and my passport were issued by the same country, but still, I was impressed. Having my photo taken by an imperturbable Arab who was in deep discussion on the phone at the same time as I went in was a new experience..

What do you mean by PRO? My company has 3 PRO's who all speak Arabic that help with documentation and issues such as this but anyone who can speak Arabic would be fine. However after reading alimart's post I would go to the ladies only room :)

Thanks for your insight! Unfortunately South African Licenses are blackliste in Holland, I would have to re-do my exams and get a new Dutch License. Cyclone, I am glad to hear that you have managed to convert the License! What do you mean by PRO? Is this someone that helps translating? Do I need any specific paper work, besie my permits, passports/ID's, Visa etc...? Thanks, Empie

I have a British passport and an Australian drivers licence. It took 3 trips but I was able to get a drivers licence here after finally taking an Arabic speaking person with me to explain that I was born in the UK but lived in Australia. The supervisor came and looked at my passport and licence then punched something into the computer and 10 minutes later I was on my way. Do you have a PRO that could assist?
