Definitely explore alternative avenues of your child's interests. My daughter is very physically active but not particarly gifted athletically. To the point that on her last sports day she acted the fool and kept 'tripping' up in her 100 yard dash; not because she couldn't run... More that if she couldn't win, she was making an excuse for barely being able to compete. I was so sad that she felt that it was first place or nothing. If she'd tried she definitely could have come middle if the pack which we would have rejoiced. However, our thoughts on "doing your best makes you our champion" doesn't wash in her mentality (she's only 5). Like the other poster mentioned, we've started sending her to a drama class which she loves. It is physical but also stimulates many of her interests with like-minded children. She's loving it and shares a group of friends outside of school. She goes to Diverse Mini Musical Theatre ( we first looked at DUCTAC but Diverse was more convenient for location). There are loads of clubs and extra curricular activities all over the city to help explore and promote the positive behaviours and characters of our little ones. I hope you find something suitable. K

Why not take him along to Cub Scouts? Lots of kids to play with and new friends under adult supervision.

In answer to your request, the Centre for Child Learning and Enrichment offers social skills sessions. This is their website: http://www.childlearning.ae/index.html. I think these are primarily intended for kids with special needs, but they may be able to help you with details of other sessions. But are you sure this is what your son needs? Perhaps another option would be to limit the athletic activities and find things he enjoys and is good at and help him make friends there. My son, also 8, struggled with PE to the point where he now has external PE lessons to avoid the teasing (I think we only got permission to do this as a result of his Aspergers diagnosis, so I'm not suggesting this as a solution). However, he focused on things he was good at - computers etc. - and now has friends come round to play computer games rather than him trying to fit in on more sporty play dates and he is much happier. He acknowledges that he is rubbish at sport but brilliant at other things which makes it easier for him to laugh off the criticism.

My son is really finding it difficult to make friends ... he's 8 years old and he's not very 'athletic' so kids make fun of his running ... has anyone heard of social skills lessons?
