The fact that Japan is now facing a nuclear radiation leak threat (even if it remains a threat and doesnt escalate to a full-blown crisis) is enough to put weight to the argument of whether such a facility should have ever been operated, no matter the safety features, in a country with the earthquake history that it has. ok...what is your idea/suggestion of viable, relatively cheap technology that will power Japan.Or world... btw. i believe nuclear energy is the best thing and cleanest thing we have so far...and have no problem with it...i suppose many will be moving then, as UAE signed agreement last year to build one here(nuclear plant). <em>edited by Goose on 13/03/2011</em>

There are 50 nuclaire reactors in 18 locations in Japan. The entire archipel is prone to earth quakes. We shouldn't have had them to start with. But did we have the choice? We are having the dinner with lights off today to be with the victims and to be with the survivors who still live without electricity.

Izzy99, the situation in Fukushima is not like Chernobyl because the reactor type is totally different and even if they can't cool the reactor easily the radiation will be contained in a way that was impossible in the Chernobyl disaster. The radiation released in Fukushima is likely only to impact a 30 km radius at most in the worst case scenario. The reason Japan has nuclear reactors is because it has no natural resources of its own, they have no way to produce electricity other than to import it or use nuclear energy. The reason the Americans might not feel they can stop Japan from having nuclear energy, well it might have something to do with the fact they tested two nuclear bombs on Japan. Japan, as the only nation to experience the devastation of atomic attack, has expressed its abhorrence of nuclear arms and is determined never to acquire them. SO comparing Japan to Iran, is frankly, ridiculous.

The fall out will destroy (not only environmentally but economically) many of Japan's neighbours that are of some of the poorest countries in the world. Who will buy, say Filipino bananas if they have radiation rained on them. Chernobyl nearly whipped out welsh lamb farmers..... Sorry but totally irresponsible of Japan to have nuclear reactors.... why on earth wasn't America going ape over these? when they seem to be itching to go to war over Iran's attempt to get nuclear power? Seriously some skewed politics going on. U do understand that Ukranian plant and the one in the Japan have nothing in common...ie. they are completely different design. What happened in Ukraine and how was that plant operated and build(and type alone) is completly diffrent story.

Actually makes me pretty angry really, why on earth did they built nuclear reactors in an area that is prone to earthquakes and seismic activity? If they explode, not only will they destroy parts of Japan but who knows how far the radiation will reach. Look what happened with Chernobyl? When i was at uni i had to do an essay on the effects of it and researching what happened and how it was handled made me physically sick. Chernobyl was categorised as a "7" and the current situation in Japan is a "4", according to the BBC news yesterday... (not that i'm any the wiser...) Yes the leaks at nuclear power plants in Japan are reported to be not as grave with a lot of built-in safety measures, but at some point really isnt it a question of how necessary it is given the odds.
