to get in touche with people in japan, do not use emails to mobile or telephones. twitter seems to be the best way for now. my mail to my sister's mobile didn't get through, but twitter messages got through. We have just been able to establish contact again as well - via Facebook. I have been on Facebook all night talking to my former Japanese students-some spent the night in shelters and they say public transport is chaotic-luckily they missed the worst of it

This is horrific! Thoughts to anyone with family in affected areas. Gleeky - do you have family there? Yes, my entire family (other than mother and brother) live in Japan. Father has emailed me twice. He lives in Roppongi area of Tokyo and he says that no mobiles or phones are working, but apparently internet is/was. We haven't heard from our other family members who are mostly in Hiroshima and Akita. Japan is, thankfully, experts at building structure for earthquakes, so though there is tons of damage, that wasn't the biggest issue. It was the tsunami that hit the coastal areas, that was devastating. :( DS was bawling last night when we talked about what happened. These are the moments when it's hard to be away from our family back home.

CNN, Sky etc are saying that all of the pacific have tsunami alerts but when you read the papers in Australia they say nothing to worry about and not tsumani alerts here - very conflicting information. Hopefully the TV channels are just being supercautious. Yep, seems the SMH is reporting that the australian authorities are saying no Tsunami, and that the US has no authority to issue a warning and that there is not one... It's been upgraded to an 8.9 already. It is also half term in Malaysia and many kids in our school is from Japan. In fact DD just made contact with her friend in Tokyo and it sounds like utter chaos there with warnings for more devestating waves. She had access to FB briefly, no phones and now nothing :( Can't reach them at all.
