Generally a no no, I know, but what about for the specific reason of leaving Dubai (next month) and buying things to ship back in cargo?!
Is it perhaps common to pay salary early to allow maids to do this?
We have already given her half her pay early (2 days ago) to spend for this reason, but now it's not enough.
All gone! I have said no to more, but just wanted to check if I am being unreasonable.

I've made a few points: one, if we pay her all her salary early to spend now then she will have nothing to live on next month (we don't have a specific leaving date yet, but sometime in April). Second, that it she wanted to buy things here to take back then she should have saved some salary over the preceding months to allow her to do this (rather than sending it all home). ANd third, that she'd maybe be better off buying stuff in Sri Lanka where things are surely cheaper. Sadly 'Money all gone madam ' doesn't seem like our problem! She is now regretting her expenditure..

Agency maid next time for us - they are not allowed to ask for advances or loans.

That's interesting comp99. At least gold jewellery isn't bulky and heavy. Our lady has just had a huge crate of stuff picked up by the cargo company tonight, including rugs, rolls of wallpaper, crates of Coca Cola!

It is quite usual for maids to go on a shopping spree just before departure. A friend had a similar experience with her maid. Her maid spent the last few weeks doing shopping for stuff and gold jewelry. My friend breathed a huge sigh of relief when she finally dropped her maid at the airport!

Looks that way Silvstet! Is it usual for maids to buy up stuff from Dubai to take back home? I wouldn't know as she's our first long-term maid (we packed the first one off very rapidly so no chance for her to shop!). It seems odd to me as we found SL so cheap when we went. Oh well, it's her money at the end of the day, and not really our business.

ditto what seasand says. Your gal has had a good ride lol. Sounds like she has been taking the **** so to speak. You hired a helper to help the maid, well good for you for doing that and it is a shame you were flamed on here but certainly not unheard of lol... Just tell her that she has had her advance and she will get her pay when it is due and not before as you are still paying both her and her helper!! Tell her not to ask for an advance on anything because she will not get it... she has food and shelter and will get a ticket home and end of service bonus.

Ha! Nice of you to say so, but not always lovely:I was recently flamed on here over the same lady's medical expenses. I have still not paid for further medical investigations as the lady concerned won't do what she's told and keep away from anything that will aggravate her back/shoulder condition either in or outside work. I have hired a Part time lady to spare her the heavy duty cleaning, but she then complains she has hurt her back again dragging heavy items she has bought home (3 times). I'm afraid my sympathy waned a bit. Will see what anyone else has to say about advances. I suspect the next request will be an advance on her end of service bonus! I think the reality of going back home and having no income may be hitting. It stuns me that maids don't seem to plan ahead to this day. Apologies for the rant - I'm very bored of all this!

If she has spent half her salary in just 2 days then I definitely wouldn't pay her anymore. As long as she has food and a roof over her head she is probably a lot better off than many others. I would only pay her now when the rest of her salary is due and not before. Start sticking to a pay day and tell her that. She will thank you in the long run. Lets be honest how many other jobs pay in advance? You sound a lovely lady. Unfortunately sometimes people will take advantage of that.bye:
