Hi ladies,
We are Australian and my husband has been offered a job which would mean relocating to Dubai with our two children, 5 & 3. I’m just wondering before he accepts the job there’s a few things to consider.
Is it expensive to live over there? Groceries, utilities etc? Schooling and accomodation is supplied with the job.
What’s life like? I’m worried about my children adjusting.
We want to be able to save whilst there. Is that a realistic goal?

Hi ElysseJade, I am in a very similar position to you. I'm from the UK, I also have two children who are 3 and 5 and my husband has also been offered a job in Dubai. You have listed all my concerns and questions! We are fortunate that we are going to Dubai as a family for a week at the end of May so myself and my children can see what it's like. The big difference is that my husbands company have offices in Dubai and he already goes there for a week every 6-8 weeks. So he's fairly clued up, I however am cluesless. I keep waivering between being excited at the opportunity and terrified at the big change for us all. It would be good to talk as we sound in a similar situation.

Shifting or relocating to a new place is actually a new experience that takes time to adjust. Actually, Dubai is an expensive place to live in. But if your husband's salary is good enough to meet all the needs, then it's not a big problem. You can easily overcome the current confused situation. Dubai is a beautiful place to visit and you will really love here. Don't worry about the educational system here, you can definitely get a good education in Dubai.

Couple of things to consider and to be totally realistic. You say schooling and accommodation is supplied, do you mean you have an allowance or you are given the accommodation and school place ? These are two very different things. If you have an allowance then the level of this will/may dictate where you can afford to live and the type of accommodation. Likewise your education allowance may not necessarily cover the fees. If you have both provided then the area you live and quality of accommodation may impact how well you settle and your ultimate happiness. Whether living costs are expensive is all relative to family income whatever others say they spend. Likewise whether or not you can save. All I would say is do your research thoroughly, Dubai can be a fantastic place to live but can also be very miserable if you get it wrong.

Your children will get adjusted even before you guys get adjusted. Moving into Dubai is really a very good option. It also depends on your husband's pay.

Hi, I am also Australian and have been in Dubai for 8 months. If your husband has schooling and housing provided for then that is great because these are your major costs. Groceries and utilities aren't that expensive - we pay about 700 aed a week on groceries. You will probably end up buying a car so factor that in to your calculations - possibly two depending on where you live. Taxis are very cheap compared to Australia. A live in nanny / housemaid costs about 3500 aed through an agency plus additional startup fees. My child was 4years old when we moved. We came in the middle of summer and that was a big mistake. My child was fine once she started school and made friends. I like it here but the lifestyle is very different to Australia.

Hello, Hope you are well? Me and my husband moved to Dubia with our two children a few years back, in very similar circumstances to you. My children adjusted fine and are really enjoying life out here. And when it come to costs, just like any other places its just about hunting around for barginings. Debbie xox

Hi Elysse, hope you are doing good. I moved here to Dubai from India an year ago. And yes it was a little tough at first time to get adjusted in this new place. It takes time for us and also for the kids to get adjusted. But now everything has come back to normal and we are living a happy life. And about the expensive, yes Dubai will be more expensive compared to Australia.

Your kids will adjust fine (as in - faster than you! We moved 7 times before my kids were 10 - no big deal on any of them except the anxiety that happens before the first day of school) The key is to keep the kids busy - if they are bored, they are miserable - the second they have one friend, they are happy again. There are lots of Australians in DXB (or were when we lived there). Compared to the US, Dubai is more expensive
