Marycatherine- I said I go out with him 15 mins(maybe more)in the morning before going to work, then again when we come home from work and for 1 hour every evening! I find this is more than enough as when we are home we still have lots of playtime in the garden! Now, when you said you are going out during the summer in the day, won't the dog burn his paws??? I burn my feet as the floor is so hot so won't it be the same for a dog????? Just thinking as I havn't had a dog here in the summer!
SueB-thank you-I will try out the teetree oil-we are using scented clorox or dettol at the mo...ooops! Doesn't smell like amonia tho.
It is the submissive peeing and we have someone coming over to assess us and the dog to see how we can help him! He got much better over the weeks-think he is learning. He is very lazy and loves to just hang around the house and be stroked-even if we leave the door open! He even defended my house and 2 cats when another cat 'broke' in-he knew something was wrong and kept on barking until we investigated!!! Clever boy!
It's great that some people are home all day to walk their dogs many times a day but that would mean only unemployed people can own a dog. So I think 3 times a day will be enough-most of my friends work-some full days some part time and their dogs are happy(I suppose)...I think it is down to the family, after all a dog usually fits in with the humans lifestyle...( unless they are tiny and need to go out every 2 hours...) Just my opinion tho!
We love our dog and he enriches our family unit a lot(not just in pee, lol) He is a great friend for my son and it is beautiful to watch when they play together! And he helps me getting fit with the walkies!
sorry marieke - but 3 x a day may not be enough --- for now. You have to go out for at least one "big" walk - 45 min to an hour per day (hey, it's good for you too! bonus!!) He is learning, just as a child is potty trained. It can take longer or shorter depending on the CHILD not on what you're doing.
From your post, your dog is getting less than an hour per day to "do his business". It's not just his business - it's getting out, sniffing what's happening in the neighbourhood and getting exercise. To give you a comparison.
When you get up in the morning, do you spend 15 minutes of exertion, go back to bed, then about 3 or 4 in the afternoon, go out for another 30 - 60 minutes? Would you do that to a two year old child?
Yes it gets hot in summer, you go out early (5am in my case) so puppy can RUN for 30 - 60 minutes before it gets too hot. then puppy goes out around 11am for a quick bathroom break, and another when I get home about 4pm. After the sun goes down, we go out for another 30 minutes maybe not so active as 5 am but to try and get some exercise (for both him and me) and take care of bathroom duties.
I've been doing this for 14 years. Is it fun every day? NO! But this is a LIFE that I HAVE CHOSEN to take on through the good and the bad. If people (and I'm not saying you are in this group) cannot take the rough with the smooth - DON'T GET A PET OF ANY KIND.
just make sure you are not disinfecting with bleach as it smells like amonia :)....you could try about 15 drops in a bucket of water of Tea Tree Oil :)
if it is a submissive pee, then that is a totally different thing than peeing all over the house.

We go for a walk 3 times a day and all my friends who have dogs only go 2 times a day so I know it can work. Now, in the mornings he gets 15 mins and he does his business, then again around 2is where we go 20-30 mins for a wee and sometimes poo and then in the evening usually an hour....I have heared in the hot month here you only walk dogs early morning and late evening as the floor is too hot-so how is that going to work?
I desinfect the house whenever he does his submissive pee ( just the area ) but if it is a full be I mop the whole room with desinfectant as it i just disgusting! Now he is getting better and I am pleased with the progress he is making and he responds well to treats or even just praise.
Thanx for all your great tips so far!!!!
Maybe you could try and source something like this?

I though it was pretty impressive!

marieike, why are you disinfecting the house all the time? I wonder if your dog is a bit stressed? if there is someone around the poor fella should not have to hold his pee for a whole long time and dogs go to poop about 2x a day. Mine does in her early a.m. walk and hher dinner walk... and she goes out to pee if necessary. Find a spot in the yard and let the poor pup go there, fence it off or something.

Maybe you could build him a 'toilet' in the garden. Many dogs can be trained to go in the same area every time...a sandbox can work. You'll still need to pick up after him as you do on walks, but it also helps to hose the sand every now and then to stop it getting too smelly. Place it somewhere that the water can drain away from other communal/play areas. Teach your son that this is an off-limits zone for him.
I also cannot see how you can expect him never to relieve himself somewhere on the property, unless you're walking him every few hours. Better to make things easy on you (and him) rather than setting yourself up for stress and failure.
Patience is the key as you said. Dogs will pee as a sign of submission, so if you're upset with him, he'll pee as a gesture of submission (recognizing you're the boss) it's not malicious, it's doggy speak. Both you and he will benefit if you can keep things calm - and get him out for a walk often (even if it's only for 15 minutes - it's good for you too as a bonus!)
When he does do his business outside, praise, praise, praise. You can also start to try and teach him that it's time to go - as soon as he lifts his leg or squats use a key word or phrase (I use hurry up, basically because I had to housebreak my dog in December/January in Canada and at 2am in your jammies it's damn cold). She has learned that hurry up means to start looking for a "good" spot. It doesn't always work (sometimes she just doesn't have to go) but 90% of the time she does at least "try".
Good luck - it will take time but if you keep it positive and calm, you should see good results in a matter of a few weeks (with some accidents along the way).
Thank you for your replies. I will try to stay more calm and patient with him as otherwise he is the perfect dog. He can hold the real big pee and poo for a really long time which is great!!!!
The reason I didn't want him peeing in the garden is it is all interlock and my little son plays there-after desinfecting the whole house all the time I didn't want to do he same with the garden...And it's not that he needs a wee-he is just over anxious....I'll keep you all posted!
As an addition - my dog (10years +) has had occasional accidents inside. I have never punished her for these because I am rarely there when she pees. Most of these accidents have been as a result of my not being alert to signals that she wanted to go outside.
Like children, dogs are often unable to "tell" us that they need to go outside (more often, we're not paying attention). Young dogs like young children have less control and fewer communication skills. We as the "adults" have to learn to pay attention
As for baths ,
if he smells, bath him. You can get basic dog shampoo from supermarkets. You can use yours. Just make sure he is RINSED COMPLETELY, soap is rarely the problem, lack of rinsing is. if he is typical the first thig he will do is roll in dirt after the bath (frustrating but that's what dogs world wide do). Let him dry off as much as possible outside.
Peeing as you describe it is a sign of submissiveness. Most (male) dogs pee inside to mark territory. Lots of walks, lots of praise when peeing outside, removing all pee traces inside (no negative reinforcement if the dog pees inside) will hopefully get rid of your and his problem. Like toilet training a child, it can take time for those who need a little more time. Well worth it in the end.
it can be sorted :)

I know peeing the house is a non no, but why cants the little fella pee in the garden in a designated spot? an awful lot to ask of a 10 month old pup unless you take him for quite a few walks :)
Hi there-we have a 10 month old lab/saluki mix who has finally learned not to do his business in the house or the garden...At last! But he still does a little wee whenever he is happy, excited, worried, scared or anything else..Like if we want to go walkies and I get the lead he pees-then lies in it-yuk! Or when he wants to be stroked and I do and he enjoys it he pees...you get the picture? I know it's only a little wee but so many times a day it gets really annoying now plus he really smells...Someone said not to bathe or wash a dog with shampoo(for dogs) as it will make the fur more smelly??? Please tell me this is a problem which can get sorted???Help!!!!
