National Insurance Number for 16 year old - how do you get it?

DS was born in the UK but as he is not resident there has not automatically been sent a national insurance number. Apparently there's a helpline number to phone if you are under 20 and haven't received your number but I suspect it's not really aimed for those resident abroad. Has anyone managed to get an NI number for a child resident here or did they have to wait until they moved back to the UK?

Thanks for any advice.

Thanks for your help, ladies. I was just thinking ahead about possibly getting him some work experience in the UK next summer, which he'd need an NI number for. Speak to HMRC they are really helpful too

My son got his from here. We rang DWP and had to give his Child Benefit number plus the woman asked to speak to both of us. We told them we were only living here temporarily, having been sent here by my husband's job.

You have to be resident in the UK to apply. If returning to UK it might be possible set things in motion ahead of time but he'll have to be resident back in UK to complete.
