You can't just apply for membership to the DOSC. You have to "know" people and have two existing members sign you in and vouch for you to become a member. You have to take a sailing class and then "volunteer." Through volunteering you gain access to the club and people are willing to sign for you. After you gain membership you have to continue to volunteer on a monthly basis for the club. There is quite a long list for sailing classes but with persistence you can get yourself in and get a class.
you are welcome! I would advise emailing the lady in the sailing office (cant remember her name) but it would be an idea to stress to her that you are keen and would be willing to come at a moments notice. think she keeps a reserve list as once I did this with my DD, she got places on kids courses quite quickly but at the last minute and luckily we were free.
good luck. I may explore JASC too as we never had any luck joining DOSC
Thanks gardengirl. I am on the waiting list for the weekend classes and don’t mind the last minute calls…if they do come. Will look in to JASC in the meantime as well.
Having recently moved to Umm Suqueim we are contemplating becoming members at the sailing club and getting in to sailing. Tried to inquire at the club about membership and/or sailing classes but apparently there is a long waiting list for both!
Does anyone have any suggestions/hints on how to get the membership. Would an introduction from an existing member help? Any suggestions welcome..
You could try JASC. Speak to Yousef the manager. Also Laser Performance Company in Dubai will be running some sailing courses from Mid January. JASC does not have the catering facilities of DOSC but is a very active club. You can still put your name down at DOSC anyway.Good luck.
its very difficult to get membership without contacts and years of sailing experience!
you can go on a waitlist for weekend sailing courses, but the only chance of getting on is if you are prepared to go last minute if a member drops out. if you happy to get a call the day before and then sail for the weekend, you may have a chance. otherwise it is sometimes possible to get private lessons during the week which are more expensive, but if you really want to learn to sail, this could be an option for non members
good luck
