I've just checked my Salik balance online and some of the trips are not charged for (0 AED) and others charged at 4 AED. Anyone know why?

Unless things have changed, the way Salik works is you get charged every time you pass a Salik gate. HOWEVER, if you pass two consecutive Salik gates [i'>traveling in the same direction [/i'>within a certain time limit (I am not sure but think 45 minutes), then you will only be charged for one gate. For example, using Dubai Cheeky's trip, from Marina to Dubai Mall, DC would have passed both Al Barsha gate (next to MOE) and Safa gate (next to Safa Park) in less than 45 minutes. She would have only been charged for the first gate (Al Barsha) - Dhs 4, and there will be Dhs 0 next to Safa Gate. On the return trip, DC would have again passed the two gates, Safa and Al Barsha. In this case, she would have been charged for the Safa gate and not for Al Barsha gate. @The Mrs: You do get charged for the return trip.:) Absolutely correct!!!! {my salik bill is over 600/month ;'(}

If the rules haven't changed, the maximum charge for Salik is 24 Dhs per day. The only time Maktoum Bridge is free is from 10pm to 5:59am (the non-operational hours of Floating Bridge). :-) edited by Saharagypsyrose on 23/10/2011

Aha! This does make more sense now. Hubby said it was for return journey. :). Apologies for confusing issue. :p

It certainly used to be as MC describes...only one charge while travelling on the same road in one direction within an hour. Same for the return journey - one charge within an hour on the one road. AND you'd only be charged a max of *three* (??) times per day no matter how often and how many gates you passed under.

You don't get charged for your return trip through the same salik gate, if it's on the same day. Hence the zero charge. :) Oh really? I dont think this is true. Its possible that if you go through the same gate within one hour it might be free, but if you go through the same gate 8 hours later, then surely they charge you? My return trip definitely wasn't within an hour - was in the mall for longer than that. DC

Didn't know that the return was free but pleased to hear it! DC :) edited by DubaiCheeky on 22/10/2011

Also, if you go through the safa park toll gate and then the Maktoum bridge/Garhoud bridge toll gate within one hour, one will be free.
