To our mums on the board, we would love to hear your thoughts... We're back on DubaiEye103.8 on Sunday afternoon from 2pm to talk about travel and events. And the chosen topic this time is whether holiday should be homework free for children?

Would you/do you encourage your kids to do extra work or homework during the summer holidays?

Is it a good idea to continue the efforts of your child's educators whilst your abroad/on the summer break?

A lot of Dubai's youngsters are out of school for 8 weeks or so during summer, after all. It's quite a long time from their academic break.

As adults, we all know that after a break, going back to work can be difficult... Surely it's worse for children?

Lastly, is it irresponsible for parents to forget school work all summer?

We'd love to hear everyone's thoughts - we'll read all of them out on air during the show, so listen in :)

Thanks ladies!

I think that the summer break is a well-deserved one for kids. After all, they do work excessively during the school year. That said, I think maybe doing some bed-time reading or some math problems after dinner once a week wouldn't hurt. I also think that if you want to help your children study and still enjoy the summer vacation, their brains should be stimulated in a more exciting way that would sort of coincide with their summer break. For example, instead of the boring old math text book routine for the little ones, why not take them berry picking and incorporate the math problems using the fruits, or for spelling, you could try to make it into a game so that it doesn't seem like the school-time routine, in whati s meant to be a break away from school..

Throughout summer holidays in general, I don't see an issue with encouraging your kid(s) to do a little extra credit in preparation for the next term.. While abroad? I guess it depends on the nature of your trip abroad. If it's a family vacation for one, two or maybe three weeks to somewhere new then absolutely not. Kids need a break too! If you're evacuating the country for the entire length of summer and heading 'home', then I'd treat it the same as my former point.
