Another benefit of being silver was the business class check in, but hubby told me that it is no longer a perk, and only Gold members can use it now . Also no lounge access for silver (the breakfast used to kick start me for the journey!) As far as I can see, now the only silver perk is excess baggage. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

If plane A leaves Dubai travelling at 600MPH and plane B leaves New York travelling at 450MPH and the distance between the two cites is 6800 miles how far from New York will it be when the two planes meet? Dunno, about 4180?

Nice! I actually considered changing the flight but the only benefit right now is the baggage - Silver gets 42 kgs and Gold gets 46 so it's actually NBD. BTW I cannae BELIEVE the difference in price for excess baggage between the UK and UAE compared to Toronto-UAE! 2338 AED for 25 kgs between the UK and UAE and $149 CAD (560 AED) for up to 32kgs a bag between Toronto and UAE! I was shocked! Sorry for the hijack Wuf :) edited by CanadianInDXB on 11/03/2011

This is a subject close to my heart - I dinnae check to see when my Gold class expired, as I knew it was coming - and it expires [b'>literally[/b'> the day before I leave for vacation. That sucks! My Mum lost her silver last year because they changed the number of tier miles you get. Before, tier miles = exact miles flown and now, it's less so where she used to get silver every year with four trips over, now she doesn't as she only gets 24,000 miles for those four trips instead of 26,000 something she used to get. Luckily for me, she now uses that as an excuse to come more often :D.

No - your tier miles stay until the end of the 12 (or 13) month period. Say you travel 28,000 miles between January and December. You receive 28,000 Skywards miles and 28,000 tier miles. If you used 25,000 miles for an upgrade in June, come December you'd still have 28,000 tier miles even though you'd only have 3,000 Skywards miles. In a nutshell, your Skywards miles are gone once you've used them but the tier miles aren't usable in that sense and they don't go anywhere until your tier miles account is wiped clean at the end of the 12 month period. They're just a record of how many miles you've flown for tier purposes. Does that make sense? I think so-he can keep his spiffy gold card till Nov-then see if he retains it depending on how far he has flown in the past 12 months

Yes clear as mud. This will make it sooo much clearer - ha ha The level you are is dependant on the amount of tier miles you earn in a year (you actualy are given about 13 months) not the amount of SKYWARD miles you earn. ..and when you use Skywards miles you lose tier miles/points too.....right?

You do not get tier miles on flights paid for fully with miles, however if you pay for economy then use miles for an upgrade you get credited with the tier miles based economy, and the same for purchase business and upgrade to first you get credited with the relevant business tier miles for business for that flight. No wonder I am confused!1 I understand what you mean though edited by wuffles on 11/03/2011

Here's the only part of the site that I found that makes sense to me: Tier miles required to qualify and retain - Skywards Silver 25,000 Miles to be earned in a consecutive 12 month window* Tier miles required to qualify and retain - Skywards Gold 50,000 Miles to be earned in a consecutive 12 month window* *This means you will not lose your Miles at the end of the year if you travel in any consecutive 12-13 month period, helping you to maintain your current tier status.

Sorry Wuffles, I was wrong - it's how much you earn, not how much you spend

I think I reacted too soon and have been reviewing some emails we received from Skywards. I think I might be wrong. They review your activity once a year and if you have not travelled enough to keep your Gold status, that's when you lose it....

Probably a dumb question but if you use your Skywards miles do you risk losing the ttier you are on? Hope that makes sense.
