You are right Fairydust. We are definitely going to get it checked out in a few days.
Really praying for a miracle so we can solve this once and for all.
Fingers crossed. :-)
I'd say it's definitely still worth going to see a sleep study specialist. My mother is fit and healthy in every other way apart from the sleep apnea. For years we just thought it was 'snoring', and sorry to say but your average Dr or GP might not be versed in the underlying causes and effects of the snoring, that a specialist would be. Nothing to lose by getting it checked out.
Yes! And my husband stayed there for the night when he was hooked up to everything, they determined he has mild sleep apnea, was advised to loose weight, exercise, eat better. He did all of that, lost 8 kgs, still snores like a locomotive engine
We have tried everything as well, the only thing that works is when he lies on his side but that requires constant waking up, etc...so sleeping apart a few nights a week can restore your own sanity. This is THE ONLY solution for us. Surgery is not an option as it does not guarantee success. The "couple" side of the relationship has only improved from this as now I am well rested, not resentful or angry. You can try going to bed together in the evening and when the snoring is unbearable move to another bed, then when its the morning quickly scoot back to bed with him for 5-10mins. ;)
BTW the cost of staying for an overnight observation was insane! Over AED3,000 as the insurance doesn't cover it mostly. Ask them to give you a full quote before committing to it.
We have done sleep study as well but it was through Dr Bhagat. He gave contact of a guy who left a machine at our home and showed us how to hook it up for the night. He took the machine next day and sent the result to the doctor. It cost only 1500 something and was not covered by insurance.
Agree with fairydust.. long term problems with sleep apnea are quite scary. Ranging from sleepiness during day to heart damage and stroke.
Even mild apnea increases all these risks if left untreated. Dr Mueller loves surgery and never recommends cpap machine but the surgery he recommended was quite extensive and had no guarantee of a complete cure so we opted for cpap machine, which we bought from US. Same machine was too over priced in dubai.
Cpap machine is not a pleasant thing to use but I am sure you hubby would get used to it when he would feel difference in his energy levels. You should definitely consider it for the long term benefits.
Hehe...
My hubby is also pretty fit so I am expecting to get similar results but let's see how the test goes and we will take it from there.
I won't give up till I find a solution. I am way too grumpy when tired. :-)
Mild sleep apnea is fine to live with (dr said so), when you get to moderate or severe that is when you really have to be concerned and use the machine, etc... We are not worried as my husband is perfectly healthy, exercises regularly, fit as a fiddle with zero blood pressure etc issues. Just snores...and apparently so do I, a tiny little bit
Thank you very much for sharing your mothers experience and reminding us on the severity of the issue.
When it comes to snoring most of us get so caught up on the unpleasantness of it so that we overlook the health aspect.
We already have an appointment and will consult the doctor and most probably end up doing the sleep study to determine the underlying reason for it.
Fingers crossed that things will fall into place.
My mother was diagnosed with terrible sleep apnea and it was the cause of her horrific snoring. She sleeps with a machine, but she got it in Australia, where you can try out loads of different machines and masks of varying sizes and find the right one for you.
Her machine is so quiet, you'd never know it was there and she only has a tiny mask that just covers her nose.
IF your husbands do indeed have sleep apnea, sorry to say ladies but you really do need to get it treated as at the end of the day it's very damaging to the body. My mother would stop breathing in the night because of it and the amounts of adrenaline her body was releasing to get her breathing again was damaging her heart - long term this causes heart damage and other serious health issues. Sleep apnea also raises the blood pressure.
Your husband might have to suck it up and get used to it, for the sake of his future health.
ETA - what the machines basically do, is make sure there is constant airflow into the lungs, so that they don't collapse when the person stops breathing and they send a boost of air to keep them breathing. It's honestly worked wonders for my mother. She takes her machine everywhere with her, as it's small enough to travel with AND she doesn't snore anymore.
I really can't emphasise how serious a health issue sleep apnea is. PLEASE get it sorted.
Thanks for the suggestion but I know my husband would simply not sleep with that mask on LOL
Earplugs don't work for me either as I like to be able to hear what goes on around me
Good luck, it's a neverending quest honestly.
@skyfall, thank you so much for sharing your experience and I am sorry to hear that you also haven't found a cure for that yet. I can totally relate to everything you say and not being able to sleep days and days in a row certainly takes a toll on us so currently we are doing exactly what you have suggested.
I still have a ray of hope that we will find a solution that works for us even though we have explored everything you have mentioned and even more. I have been using "The world'd best earplugs" from the US and even though it doesn't block out all sound, it is what works best for me. Also we have tried chin straps that give somewhat of a relief.
Have you ever considered the CPAP machine? My DH is not very keen on it which I am not surprised about but I have read really good reviews about it and it's effectiveness.

Dear all,
I have seen quiet a few posts on this topic in the past but so far we still have not found a solution for my DH's snoring issue.
We have seen Dr. Mueller the ENT specialist and he has suggested surgery which we would like to avoid as I have read on many occasions that it's not the best option and doesn't always improve the condition.
Furthermore we have tried each and every nose ring, strips, sprays etc. that is on the market without success. We have tried separate bedrooms and even though it works wonders for our sleep it doesn't really work for us as a couple unfortunetly.
I suppose the next step would be to find a sleep/ snore specialist to explore other options. I have seen that the CPAP machine is highly praised on the forum however my DH is very reluctant to use it.
If you ladies know of any specialist or could give us suggestions on who we can consult I would be highly grateful.
