Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
We are about to sponsor a Sri Lankan lady as our housemaid. We have been told that before she will be allowed to leave the airport in Colombo, they will require some kind of insurance?
We have to go to the Sri Lankan consulate here in Dubai, get something off them (assume a document stating that we are going to be er sponsors?) and send it off to her along with the entry permit. She will then take this to an office in Sri Lanka (I'm told they have one in the cities and at the airport) she will present the documents, pay a sum or about 400dhs and then they will grant her this insurance and she can leave for Dubai.
Can anyone explain to me what exactly this insurance is and if this is infact what needs to be done?
Thanks

Thanks glasgo2010. I hope the rules haven't changed too. So frustrating when you get conflicting advice and then have the added knowledge of Dubai and how it's rules change on a daily basis.

emailed copies are definitely enough. We sent our maid to Colombo instead of Kisch without checking with the Sri Lankan embassy - so she was stuck for an extra 2 days (extended hol) until we emailed everything over. This was in October so hopefully the rules haven't changed since then

We sent a scaned copy to her e-mail and she printed it out in some internet cafe. We've emailed them to her. She is going to an Internet cafe today to get them. But the lady at the consulate told my DH we need to send her the originals...so now he's stalling booking the ticket incase this is the case. Every number in Sri Lanka we try call to find out is engaged or just rings.

Ladies, we now have all the docs... one last question... Can I email her the "Agreement letter" and the entry permit? Or does she need the original documents? Thanks again

Now, would this be the same if you were to hire a Sri Lankan from an agency? Will the agency sort out the paperwork? Yes, SQ, I believe the agency would do it all and just bill you for it...

KellsBells, we've done it for our previous made - it was about 2 years ago. I think it is compulsory if you opening the visa. In case of transfering visa you don't have to do it, because she doesn't have to fly back to Sri Lanka. Be aware, if she has "housemade" visa, they may force her to pass "housemade training program" at additional cost (not big amount, but we lost her ticket because they did not let her out of country without certificate of completion of the course). Once again, it was about 2 years ago, and some regulations may change. Ask in the Sri Lankan consulate about the "housemade training" to get a clear picture. Good luck.

Afraid so...you will have to pay them a visit. What you need is a 'Contract of Employment for Domestic Helpers' issued by the consulate and also you need to buy the insurance (I think it is repatriation insurance) - total cost including typing centre stuff was AED485. It was all done in about an hour HTH
