I read somewhere (and have nothing to back this up) that Umm Seqiem means Mother of Sickness. That's right. In the good old days, all the sick people living in Dubai were "banished" to the far away of land of Um Suqeim so as not to spread illness to the rest of the population! Well, that explains all the ghosts and spirits then. How interesting!

In Arabic it's 'Oom' as in 'book' and 's'Qeem' - the 'q' noise is not a sift 'q' like 'queen', it's a noise I can't describe in writing lol. You sort of touch the back of your tongue to the roof of your mouth to do it... For non Arabic speakers 'Oom suh-keem' is fine :) Oh yeah and Mad-een-aht (soft 't') - not Mad-in-AT! Arabic is HARD but it is a nice language IMO - if you listen to some of the poetry being read, it really is lovely.

Yes, alphabets are different so it's phonetic. You'll see a sign for somewhere then 500m up the road there'll be a sign for the same place, but spelt differently. There's a place near me called Omar Laundry. Directly under that sign board is another one saying Umar Laundry. Same same. But different.

Oh gosh! I have been saying it soooo wrong! I HATE that! Now I'm sure I must be saying other things wrong too, LOL. What a yokel! Why is it that so many areas are never spelt consistently over there? Is it because the Arabic alphabet does not transfer to English directly? Such a fascinating land. I can't wait to get over there.
