found loads of brown rice in LuLu's including short grain brown rice which is good for veggie sushi.. and brown jasmine rice, there was also brown risotto rice. Not cheap tho, about 18 dhs for 500g I think. spinneys sometimes has two types and worldmart too in the organic section HTH

I get the organic brown basmati rice from the Organic supermarket. It tastes good, but it's not as fab as the brown rice served at PF Chang's....I feed it to the kids and it helped me lose most of the pregnancy weight. Just use less water to prepare it than the packet advises, or else you will end up with mush.

You can get Tilda brown rice at Lulu and a couple of different varieties at the Organic Store. I only eat brown rice unless I am out as it has a much nuttier/savoury flavour and more satisfying to me. There were a few months last year when the supermarkets were out of regular brown and I found that I could get the 250g zap in the microwave brown rice at M & S (their brand), Lulu (Tilda and one other I can't remember) and Uncle Bens at Spinneys. The M & S one is the nicest.

I love brown rice, but can't find it out here, so a friend recommended red rice (a Philipino product?? apparently) and its not quite the same, but I like it :) I find it Spinneys Motor City, but sure to be in others.

JJ you are probably right however most rice that we buy in the west (ok we're in the ME at the moment but Westeners) is polished rice with all the bran goodness/roughage removed, I'm trying to get DH to eat more fibre in his diet - small steps! All bran cereal is pretty good for that.

Not sure the colour of the rice is the issue, never see those who use rice as stable that fat or unhealthy. Thinking Africa here, more what goes with it and quantity. Have you thought of using bulgar wheat as an alternative?

Thanks Gleek that's the long grain white one. It's parboiled so gives it that colour. Yes according to DH it's a hardship, but he's willing to give it a go!

I've seen Uncle Ben's rice in Carrefour MCC, but not sure if it's technically "brown rice." It looks brown, but I've always thought UB brand doesn't look bright white like others. Probably wrong...well, if it looks brown....it could be many things. LOL....(yuk)
