Washing machine cleaning ....

My washing machine is smelling a bit musty ... I always dry it out and leave the door open after use and clean the rubber ring ... but I think it needs a good clean. What would you suggest to give it a good freshen up?

Thanks in advance

If you have a filter attached to the water that goes into the washing machine the musty smell usually means that it's time to change or clean the filter, happens around once a year in my house. Cleaning the machine won´t help if the smell comes from the water that goes through the filter.

Just came back online - I am guessing the 1.95 is the price of a bottle of vinegar - off the shelf? I just throw it in and put the machine on Economy wash to run it through. I have only ever had this problem after being away in the summer - my maid insists on shutting the door - no matter how many times I tell her not to - because it's tidier. She only comes once a week and if I am away it wouldn't occur to my DH to check the machine is open and allowed to dry out... Half a bottle of vinegar is not a big price for the bonus of a maid so I put up with it!!

You can also buy washing machine cleaner in the supermarket. They have it in Le marché in Arabian Ranches.

thanks Teabag ... is that just regular white vinegar from the condiments section or is it in the cleaning products aisle? Sorry to be so naive!

I usually throw a cup of white vinegar in, run the machine empty, and it cleans it right up. Also - always leave the door open when not in use.
