My DD's school celebrates Valentine's day every year. I am wondering whether most parents approve of this? What is your opinion?

No, I think there's too much risk of little kids' feelings being hurt if they are left out and don't get a Valentine. And if the rule is instated that they need to bring something for [b'>everyone[/b'>, then some kids' parents will still not do it - just because they're busy, full time working, or whatever - so then those kids still miss out on the giving.

No, ridiculous to keep celebrating all these things. It's a pagan holiday that has now been fully commercialised, how does it benefit children by celebrating it within school? Bearing in mind the culture and religion of the country? edited by Jumeriah Jane on 20/01/2011

I think it's nice for the younger ones, and I quite like it. My kids' school does celebrate here (well, the elementary does, not the high school, and I'm not sure about middle school), and their schools in Australia and the US did as well. As Servants Quarters said - it has nothing to do about love between the 2 sexes - it's just something nice to do. Some of the kids bring in candy or a card for the teachers, and some bring treats for each other or little cards - and the rule at the schools we've been to is that if you're going to bring something in, you have to bring one for everyone in the class, so no one gets left out. I think it's quite sweet. Maybe because to me Valentine's Day isn't all that romantic :) Not in a bad way, but before we lived here, DH and I could never get out for Valentine's Day - had no babysitter when the kids were young, so it was always a bit of a family affair at our house. I think my younger 2 would be horrified if DH and I went out for Valentine's Day - they've never had one without us. :)

I love my homemade valentine cards and hope that this year I get 2 more. there's nothing nicer than the kids making a special valentines card in their art session. I agree with SQ - it's all about expressing love for your family/friends - doesn't need to go into detail about love between 2 sexes...... Ditto! I cried in the car on the way to work one year because I never got a valentines card from DD in nursery school, (I dunno they just didn't do it one year). DH and I don't do anything special for valentines day, I only want cards from my kids.

DD used to go to ASD where they celebrated, but it was nothing along the lines of love between 2 sexes. It was more about bringing in candy to share and making Valentines cards for the parents. General love all around....it was cute. BUT, I don't think it is something that really needs celebrating.
